Duke's major appearances in the comics correlate with his cartoon appearances... once he stopped appearing as the regular lead in the cartoons (1986 onwards), Hama pretty much reverted to using Stalker in the "prominent senior NCO" role (remember the Borovia storyline in the comics?).

The best way to do this, in a way that follows real-world precedent, is to just pattern your organization after the UK's SAS (they're the acknowledged "gold standard" in counterterrorism, anyway). SAS Squadrons have a Mobility Troop (that drive specially customized 4WD vehicles and specialize in desert warfare), a Mountain Troop, an Air Troop (specialize in HALO/HAHO), and a Boat Troop (specialize in amphibious warfare).
I do segregate my non-Army from Army but it's mostly because of that Unit's operational mission. There is some cross-pollination with the "Air Troop" (the Air Force Operators) being assigned to Army and SEaL/Marine Units. Basically it's broken down like this: The Land/Mountain/Mobility/Air Troops: The Army/USAF teams work in "land" operations. Mountains, Arctic, Jungle with an emphasis on land-based insertions. They also form the assault teams for larger missions. Assault Teams (a couple of 6 man fireteams with light armor support; comprised of Army guys - this would be where guys like Grunt, Footloose, Zap, Bazooka are with Steeler, Heavy Metal in the armor and Skidmark and others as Cavalry) Recon Teams (a couple smaller 4 man teams - this would be where Sneak Peek, Ambush and others are, Special Operations qualified guys and where the USAF guys would start showing up as Forward Observers, Combat Weathermen, etc..) Spec Ops Teams (Flint, Beachhead, Alpine, and the other rangers; also where the SWAT/CBQ units would show up - also where some of the USAF guys show up, PJs, etc..) The Boat Troop: The Navy/Marine guys with an emphasis on amphibious missions/insertions. They get supported by the Assault Teams when required. SEaLs, Marine Force Recon, VBSS

I know that Duke was never really that big a presence in the comics (until DDP, curse them!!) and the timeline makes sense. After the first season it was Duke and Flint sharing the limelight and after that it was Hawk/Duke/Flint.

I see no problem with Stalker working for Duke as another senior NCO. If the Joes are a Company sized unit, Duke could easily serve as the 1SG, and Stalker could serve as one of the Platoon Sgts.
If The Joes are a larger sized unit, Duke can serve as the Command SGM, and Stalker could serve as a SGM, or a 1SG. It's not a problem, really, to have them both serving in the role of a Senior NCO.

I know DT is Army. I figured him for Ranger the minute I saw him, but was always disappointed when they never added a little something to the filecard. Have we ever figured what the patch on his arm is from or the the chevron on his beret? At the time he came out only Rangers were wearing Black berets?
Still I got a second DT that I kitbashed into an Air Force Security MP, because the Air Force was also sporting the Black Berets. I would never say reinvent a character as something else. I just say make a new one. That is my favorite thing about Joes. I don't even care if they are carbon copies of the guys they replace, just make new ones as they go. Quote:
I'm with Loose Cannon on that. (yes, the annoying canuck is back). More characters are always good, especially if they fill holes where there aren't many.
A question for you guys, do any of you know of an online resource to look up real-world firearms by image rather than anme? I'm trying to connect my joes to real weapons and wikipedia is not the most effective way to do this if you don't already know what a gun is called. http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...ise-cobra.html A lot of the guns have been ID'd here.

You're right. This was back in 1987 so I had no idea about any SOF in the Air Force. The only I ever heard of was the Air Commandos from WWII. If I even heard of JTAC or Combat Cntrolers I think I would have made a bigger stink years ago.

I'll have to go back and re-read the first 50-odd comics with Duke in mind (as much as it hurts; Stalker all the way!) |

I'm not a Duke Hater. I learned to accept his role as confusing as it all seemed that he looked like Hawk but was enlisted and was in charge. That's why I always pegged him for more of an officer. And once more officers were introduced He didn't seem to work for me anymore. I pretended He was a Colonel. (Hawk pushed through that Commission without telling him.)
Hama seem to stick him with true 1st SGt duties back at the PITT after a certain point. Then Star Brigade, but that was lame.
