And the thing too is that their target is pretty small on top of all the complicating factors most other marksmen don't have to contend with. They're trained to hit and damage specific parts of the outboard engine and avoid others, like the integral fuel tanks (because you want to disable the engine but you don't want to ignite fuel and blow the whole thing up or sink the boat, potentially killing everyone aboard, destroying evidence, and creating an international incident in the Gulf of Mexico).

I have a book on U.S. Special Forces that basically makes the same case Zulu does. I think that because they are viewed as primarily a SAR outfit, people don't realize the other roles they play. I know Coast Guardsmen served in WW II and Vietnam, although mainly in a support capacity. And some have argued that in some ways CG rescue swimmers have a tougher job than their Navy counterparts and the PJs, since most of the people they rescue are civillians with little or no survival training. The main differences between the rescue swimmers and PJs are that rescue swimmers are only trained to the EMT-Basic or -Intermediate level (depnding on where they're assigned), and they don't have free-fall or SCUBA training.

It's actually pretty difficult to blow up a tank of fuel by shooting it, unless you're firing tracers or incendiary rounds. A normal round just doesn't provide the "spark" necessary for ignition and the tank has to have the right air to fuel ratio and sufficient pressure as well. But shooting from a moving platform definitely requires some serious skill.

Did you watch Modern Sniper on the Military Channel. One episode focused on the Coast Guard.

Well Gentlemen,
My 2011 Joe Con set arrived today... including all the file cards. 2 major facts... 1. Claymore is certainly an 18A - confirmed 2. Big Surprize: Dial-Tone is a Ranger-qualified, Special Forces operator. The others were basically the same as they've always been, except Wet-Suit is listed as the Pointman for the mission to Brazil... it listed his LandNav skills as the main reason he's the point man (and to separate him from Leatherneck, so they don't argue). After reading several of Dick Couch's books about the SEALs, it makes me wonder what other type of training Wet-Suit may have: Scout/Sniper? Ranger School?

Gotta keep in mind that it's the Club that wrote those. How accurate are they? And how accurate is the Club's "research" (not sure how much they actually do)?

They're not bad. They're not great, but they're SO much better than the crappy filecards that Hasbro has been giving us since RoC started, that these seem like "filecard gold".

Yeah, I guess my point is about Dial-Tone.
Do we really think he's now part of the select few Special Forces Joes?

I'm just going by the filecard... I'm adding Dial-Tone to the list of Green Berets. Perhaps the biggest injustice is that Stalker has never been confirmed as a Green Beret. The Club should fix that.

Well, in the cartoon he was always portrayed as a little "weak", but I don't know. He's supposed to be one heck of a comms expert in the field. Maybe it's like Falcon - he's was a self-centered, drug addict in the cartoon. But his filecard always made him out to be awesome, and Hasbro kept using him as a leader character.

Claymore- again, good to hear someone finally acknowledge his place officially although this is what I've always considered him to be. |
