So to me, its advantages over what already exists seem quite marginal, especially when you factor in the support for the new tech. You've got the Gryphon which requires new and specialized training to use and maintain and is projected to be able to glide 40 km on one hand, and wingsuits, which are available commercially, can be used by just about anybody qualified as a free fall jumpmaster, can be maintained using current parachute materials and technology, and can routinely get 30+ km on a high-altitude glide on the other hand. EDIT: Turns out the 35 km record I mentioned was with a strap-on carbon fiber delta wing (unpowered though, unlike the Gryphon) and not a traditional wingsuit... the traditional wingsuit glide record is actually 20 km. Also, while going through wingsuit glide records, I found out that the guy who originally published the Guinness Book of World Records is named, get this, Sir Hugh Beaver. He should totally form a band with Dick Pound.

A powered wing like the Gryphon I imagine would provide a much longer range than any unpowered wingsuit or HAHO jump and I can't see how the training to operate or maintain it would be that extensive or costly.

Training to use the Gryphon would be similarly prohibitive, if not more so. The USPA rule is that a skydiver needs at least 200 free fall jumps within the past 18 months before he is allowed his first training jump with a wingsuit. Assuming that using a powered wing like the Gryphon would need, at minimum, the same training requirements as using a commercial, non-powered wingsuit, I don't know how you'd squeeze in 200 free fall/HALO/HAHO jumps within 18 months (that's one HALO/HAHO jump every three days... think about the cost in aircraft fuel alone) and the separate wingsuit qualification training within a special operator's already busy training and deployment schedule. That's a massive, massive outlay of resources and (more importantly) time, all so he can use a rather niche piece of equipment that he'll probably never utilize in operations (to put things in perspective, the US military has conducted ~50 combat jumps since airborne military insertion techniques were first introduced in the US armed forces in 1942, and only around 6 of them were of the HALO/HAHO variety). The Martin Jet Pack could probably pass for a real-world "Trubble Bubble":
The Martin Jetpack - Martin Aircraft Company || The Martin Jetpack Just slap a bubble canopy on it and you've got yourself a working Cobra Flight Pod. |

STABO rigs wouldn't work for all environments.
Yeah, that Martin works as a real world Trubble Bubble (which I've always hated BTW). Naw, my guys use the JUMP or the RoC Assault Glider. Brainstorm makes 'em.
