So I'm working on my JOES pseudo-Delta Force squad. Right now it consists of Mercer, Outback, Lowlight, Snake Eyes, Shooter (a modified 'Storm' from Marvel Comic Packs) and Wade Collins (Crimson Guard head with ROC Desert Duke body, tho this makes him look like BSG Starbuck). I'm thinking I might want to trade Shooter for Storm Shadow.
I personally dont have a Ninja Force. But this made me wonder, does our "Filecard brethren" include Storm Shadow with Joe forces or Cobra? Does anyone else use Wade Collins? Has anyone thought of a codename for him?

Like Storm-Shadow, I think he works best when he's a reluctant and morally conflicted villain, he just becomes so much blander when he's used as a hero or a plain old evil Crimson Guardsman. |

Storm Shadow(89 homage) is a joe for me, Wade Collins sacrificed himself to save SE in my verse

I never liked the idea of keeping SS as a Joe although I love the 89 SS. Ultimately he's head of Cobra's STING (Silent Tactical Infiltration & Neutralization Group).

I was quite fond of the DevilsDue portrait of SS as a misunderstood good guy (but a good guy with his own plan, philosophy and understanding of what is right and wrong)
Seems to me the new ARAH comic is going for something similar. |

Storm Shadow works for Cobra in my book. He is utterly Loyal to CC. Why? I don't know. But if Storm Shadow tells you to do something you know those instructions came straight from the Commander.

Part of what robbed the later Marvel issues of their momentum, I think was the paucity of interesting villains. By issue #101, most of the best villains had either gone over to the Joe side or had become independent parties who, if not exactly allied with the Joes, opposed Cobra and became de facto "heroes" (via the "enemy of my enemy is my friend" rule): Storm-Shadow (who became a reserve Joe "via osmosis" off-panel sometime before issue #90), Zartan (adopted the Blind Master identity at the end of issue #91), Destro (left Cobra in issue #57, started the Iron Grenadiers in issue #69, effected a hostile takeover of Cobra soon after the Cobra Civil War, quit the joint Iron Grenadiers-Cobra franchise at the end of issue #97), and the Baroness (quit Cobra at the end of issue #97). And the collapse of the Soviet Union and the spectre of communism also took away the Oktober Guard (the best non-Hama created Joe canon characters, IMO) from their role as "bad guys." By issue #101, the Guard were no longer sworn Joe enemies (and occasional begrudging Joe allies against Cobra), they were out-and-out partners with the Joes. Still interesting, mind you, but the dynamic didn't work as well, I think.
A strong cast of villains is just as important as a strong cast of heroes in trying to maintain a sense of on-going conflict, and I've always felt that losing Storm-Shadow, Zartan, Destro, the Baroness, and the Oktober Guard to the "good guys" was an unfortunate miscalculation on Hama's part. Sure, SS and the Baroness eventually returned to their evil ways before the series ended (via an almost literal deus ex machina: the Brainwave Scanner) but by then, for me, the damage had been done and I'd already moved on to other reading material (although I think Hama was more than ready to move on from GI Joe after writing the Benzheen War anyway, I think the monthly grind of having to appease the young fans, older readers, the editors, and Hasbro -- all four groups seemed to want different things at any given time -- eventually burnt him out on the property). I think you nailed it on the head Zulu. Although I liked the return of Cobra Commander and the Trucial Abysmia storyline. We got most of the current toys without being too cheest. Ninja Force came next and it sort of took a nosedive.

I just picked up a 25th Major Blood at Five Below yesterday. Never really had much interest in this character when I was a kid, but thought he might work for a project I currently have in mind.
Question is- how do you guys use him in your verse? Mercenary or Cobra officer? Because of his helmet(Cobra trooper/ officer) I was thinking of doing a repaint and making him Cobra's battlefield leader but them I saw the skull emblem on his belt buckle and I knew he would be the perfect leader for his own army using the heads that SDS/ Trigate had- lower half of face is covered by mask and they are wearing a beret with the same skull emblem that Blood has. The heads are not currently available but that's ok because I don't have the money to buy them right now anyway. Just plotting my course. Wanted to see what you guys thought. |
