I would say Quick-Kick would fit with that group pretty well, as he's not Recon and he's not Urban assualt and he's not really Ninja Force.

Chameleon is another GI Joe intelligence operative:
I think she gets overlooked a lot in discussions like this because she was released during the "down years" of the property (1997-2001) and because the packaging describes her as a "Cobra Intelligence Officer" even as the filecard clearly states that she acts as "a secret agent for the G.I. Joes." |

So I was re-reading issue #28 of DDP's GI Joe (vol.2) when I came across the panel introducing Depth Charge. In it, he's introduced as "Sgt. Nick Langdon."
So does this mean he's not a SEAL as we've all assumed, but is instead, I dunno, an Army Engineer Diver or (less likely, because they don't do underwater demo as much) a Marine Recon Man? Or is this just a typo/a demonstration of DDP writer Brandon Jerwa's unfamiliarity with military rank? I'm leaning towards the latter myself... it has to be an error of some kind on Jerwa's part... if a character's job is "UDT (Underwater Demolitions Team)," the character has to be Navy, since UDTs were Navy units. Expecting otherwise would be like calling a character a "Ranger" and then revealing that the character is a Marine (yes, I know Force Recon Marines will occasionally go to Ranger School, but we're talking typical cases here, and besides, when I think "Ranger," I think of the members of the 75th Ranger Regiment whom successfully passed RASP, and not necessarily non-Regiment graduates of Ranger School) |

Nah, he was introduced as being from Pennsylvania in the US. An SBS Marine would be a neat complement to Big Ben, though.
Not that being of foreign citizenship ever stopped characters from joining the Joe team. In the same issue I mentioned, Vorona (a member of the Czech military) was introduced as a member of the Joe team. BTW, is Vorona supposed to be the same character as Daina from the Oktober Guard, or is it just coincidence that they have the same real name (Daina Janack)? If they're supposed to be the same character, she was certainly drawn and coloured differently in the DDP issue: the Oktober Guard Daina is a blonde, Vorona is a brunette... and given that the OG Daina, as a citizen of the former Czechoslovak Socialist Republic, served as a member of the pre-glasnost Soviet Union military, she should be much, much older than the teenaged-looking Vorona. I mean, they really look nothing alike if you compare how the OG Daina was drawn and coloured with how Vorona was depicted in that issue. I know the first Daina figure was given the code-name of "Volga" in 1998 although the subsequent version of the character (released in 2005) was named simply as "Daina". There's no "Vorona" toy, though, which is where I got the idea that Vorona and Daina (a.k.a. Volga) are possibly different characters who just happened to have been given the same real name by virtue of coincidence or carelessness... sort of like what happened between Sky Patrol's Airwave (1990) and Battle Corps' Colonel Courage (1993)... they both have the same file name "Cliff V. Mewett," despite being two totally different characters. Star Brigade's Robo-JOE (1993) and the Real American Hero Collection version of Lifeline (2002) also have the same real name (Greg Scott). So is the Vorona-Volga/Daina real name similarity another case of this duplication? Last edited by zuludelta; 04-05-2011 at 10:07 AM.. |

Yeah. Vorona is meant to be Daina. There was a storyline that had her end up joining the Joes.

Makes you wonder why Jerwa decided to give her a new code-name then, when she'd already been given the "Volga" code-name earlier (the use of "Volga" as a code-name for Daina predates Jerwa's introduction of "Vorona" by about six years). Or if he didn't like "Volga" (probably because of its Soviet allusions making it somewhat an anachronism in the post-Cold War era), why he didn't just use "Daina" or another codename that wasn't a borderline "near-homophone" of Volga like Vorona.

Vorona means "raven", I think that was the reasoning.
