My thoughts exactly.

Oh, yeah, those were some great story lines. I always loved how he could take a bunch of very different characters, put them together, and make it work. I mean, who would've ever thought you could have a good story that put Chuckles and Iceberg on the same mission. Nothing wrong with either character, just that they have very separate specialties. Same thing with the extraction issue-putting Lifeline in the back of the chopper with Repeater and Muskrat. I think that's what made SM great-the ability to focus on small groups of Joes and showcase their individual talents.
That story has so much dialogue and so much political stuff going on and interesting dynamic with the Esterhazy character, the monk, and Anderson, and SE doesn't play a big part in the story - he can't because he doesn't speak. Sometimes you forget he's even there. And then suddenly he shows up and does something totally badass. He scales that cliff and takes down the guard with the grappling hook, he drops down fromm the ceiling to kill those two other guards with his sword. Later in the third issue he takes issues into his own hands and dives into the river to save the farmer while his team mates are debating whether to get involved or not. I'd love to see SE used more like this in the context of an actual team - where he gets to be badass and has a role on the team without turning it into the Snake Eyes Show. |

Hama focused on a small number of the Joes and took the time to weave a story and background to bring their characters to life, so it's no wonder we enjoyed those stories more (well that's my take anyway ) Quote:
When I was recently rereading that story arc, it occured to me that this was some of the best use of SE - instead of dominating the storyline and killing millions of bad guys without slowing down at all, he's kind of this shadowy figure in the background.

While their specialities may have been different, and perhaps we'd not have expected different characters to be shown together in the same story/mission, there's no reason to not think that any pair of elite troops couldn't work together on any old random mission.

I imagine there's some writers' recipe book which details how often to unleash the unstoppable character to make the story interesting but not repetitive and predictable, I think Hama did well (unlike some of the later over use of SE and SS, both of whom I love.) |

So I'm losing my Joe Buzz. At least for the figures. I'm thinking of selling most of 'em off and just collecting select figures.

My interests are certainly cyclic (I've eventually learned after years of being annoyed that I had so many different things on the go rather than just doing/finishing one), including the Joe stuff, so I reckon sleep on it (for a month or so) and see if the interest returns.

Have been sleeping on it for awhile, lol.
Keep looking at the big pile of unopened stuff on my bedroom floor and going "why".

Yeah I have 4 unopened Shock troopers. My biggest problem is Custom figs. In the end I just don't have enough space. I have no love for my mostly completed o-ring collection. Then there are the vehicles that have been sitting in storage for years. I know I left the batteries in my MOBAT and it's probably corroding all over everything in that bin.
Lets see after Joe Con. I feel like the filecards have dried up and I never realized how important they were for me.

You know, I wil lprobably lose some Joe fan points for saying this, but I haven't collected figures in almost twenty years.
I currently follow the comic (pretty much all of the new ones, plus TPBs of the Marvel run) and have been developing an alternative Joe universe on the side that I'm building with Lego. I've considered taking up collecting figures and vehicles again, but I can't afford another hobby. Developing a Joeverse based around Lego ties it to another hobby I already have. I've been doing some Lego wargaming recently and could see myself using my Joe and Cobra (Lego) minifigs for this. There are lots of ways of being a Joe fan, and different ways of staying involved in the hobby. Do what makes you happy |

Well, if you're thinking of selling anything, I hope you'll give us first crack at it. What do you think has caused this change?
