Falcon as the "new leader" makes sense for a couple of different reasons. First, every wave of Joes except the '83 one has a "leader"-Hawk (comics first, cartoon later), Duke, Flint, Beach Head (cartoon only) then Falcon. Second, I'm sure Hasbro was trying to parallell Transformers: The Movie, which of course also itroduced a "new leade" (Hot Rod/Rodimus Prime=Lt. Falcon). Interestingly, there isn't another leader-type character until Capt. Grid Iron came out in '90. I also did a Falcon custom using a Pit Commando body that I repainted in desert camo. I then cut the scarf off a ROC desert Duke's vest and gave him a Lt. Stone head, with the beret painted green, of course.

Thanks! At some point I'll try to get pics on here. I went with the desert scheme not because I don't like the tiger stripes (I do!) but because I wanted something a little more modern. I was influenced more than a little bit by Zulu Delta's concept art for him.

So yeah, Joe Modern Era television (Spy Troops, Valor vs. Venom and Sigma 6) seems like Duke is younger and an officer. Since Vietnam isnt a factor anymore he can be younger. With Heavy Duty as the E-8 First Sergeant (in VvV Heavy Duty lets Hawk borrow his coat). Even tho they dont change their filecards.
For some reason I think Hasbro is hesitant to change pay grades/ranks established by Hama. Even tho Hasbro changes the responsibilities of those Joes. Like I saw a Rise of Cobra book at Target that still had Duke at E-8 and Rip Cord at E-4.

I always loved Falcon. Yeah I was wondering why they made Falcon so similar to Flint, but he was a more acurate looking (Vietnam era) Green Beret. To me they only problem with Falcon was that he was a Lt and not a Captain.
I feel the same way Lifeline about there not being a leader character the 88-89 years, although we did get quite a few officer characters those years. The highest ranking one other than HAWK. (I'm excluding Keel-Haul because almost no one had him.) But 88 we got Skystriker (Lt. Col) and Ghost-rider (Maj) both pilots but after Hawk they were the highest ranking Joes. Skystiker as a Combat Tactician seems like he had other resposibilities. And Windmill (0-3). Plus Tiger Force where Flint got his official rank of W-3 (He was always WO-2 after that.) Aside from them Blizzard is the only one who seems like a team leader to me from that year. Not to mention Super Trooper. 1989 IMO is the weakest year for leadership for the Joes. Although Payload as a Colonel is arguably a Senior Joe, but as an Astronaut his role is sort of limited same with Countdown. (Thanks to Zulu I now have better uses for Both as Air Liason Officers) However we got 6 new Sgt 1st Classes. 4 long overdue promotions.

Are you referring to the Pit Trooper? It does look like a good base for a Falcon custom. It already has the green camo pattern and the rolled-up sleeves and "fixed" Flint arms. Might be worth getting the Attack on the GI Joe Pit set for that alone (especially since it sells for pretty cheap these days, although the other figures and accessories in the set also look like decent custom fodder). What head did you use for your Falcon custom?

Thankfully I never had the misfortune to watch the cartoon - look at all the bad things it did, funny hissing Cobra Commander, dancing Snake Eyes, and replacing Stalker with All-American Hero Duke as top sergeant (which doesn't work well for one who's not American, and even for many of you guys it doesn't seem to work either ;) ) is probably the most abhorent of them.
Ah, I feel better with that off my chest |

With his realistic military look, Falcon became an immediate favorite of mine. His prominent appearance in the animated movie seems to indicate that there were plans to make him the cartoon's new central hero, but it didn't quite shake out that way. I've said it before but I always thought of Falcon as a guy who would be groomed to lead the whole Joe team someday. He just seems like a natural. To me, Falcon and Beachhead would, at some point, replace Hawk as Duke as the Joes' commanding officer and first sergeant.
