Those all make perfect sense in the context of working off of the original early 1980s setting and having to take into account their ages and such based on what we know about some of the characters' service history in Vietnam. I'd probably go a step further and "demote" Hawk to a major or even a captain to make him even more of a "boots on the ground" type and not just a desk driver. I'd always imagined that the original 1982-83 ARAH GI Joe concept worked best as a company-sized Army element.

The MMS the first "vehicle" I ever got. I swear my Hawk's filecard had his grade as O-4. I remember having to look it in the encyclopedia to find out what that meant. I remember seeing him get the "promotion" on later boxes when I went toy shopping. I wish I still had my old filecards, since I've never seen that variant documented online.

I guess Steeler could have been the de facto company commander by virtue of rank (if we're discounting Hawk), although Steeler sure didn't act (nor was he treated by teammates) like he was ranked any higher than the enlisted Joes in the comics (not to mention the cartoons). |

I wonder how Pittsburgh area Joe fans feel about Steeler?
He's a Capt. in my Joe force. Gen Flagg leads the Armor units with Storm and Steeler. Considering I only have maybe 20ish Armored vehicles it's a bit of overkill but one is the General and the other is the MCC. I would love to see the 0-4 variant of Hawk myself. It reminds me of the 3-pack cobra team I saw in a JCPenney or Sears or AAFES catalog 1981-82? that has 3 Cobra troopers. But instead one had RnR's Machine Gun, one had Zap's Bazooka and one had Short-Fuze's Mortar. There was another 3 pack with CC and the Officer and Trooper. There were 2 sets of 3 packs for the Joes as well. One had the 3 Joes mentioned before IIRC, and one set had Snake-Eyes, Scarlett and Flash/Stalker. Considering that was 30 years ago maybe I was dreaming. But I don't think so.

Having grown up in PA, I thought it was cool that he was from Pittsburgh and named Steeler. His rank of 2LT of course was suspect. If he's a platoon tank commander, then he would probably be a 1LT, unless an elite unit like the Joes are really hurting for officers and they're scooping up newbies right out of training. I also never understood why the Joes didn't have some kind of First LT/Platoon Leader. That's probably why I liked Falcon so much when he arrived on the scene because he was perfect for that role. And since Claymore was the first Infantry Captain, he became my default Company Commander. Doc and Ace couldn't be expected to fill those boots.

Never really made sense for Steeler to be ranked so high, at least not in the beginning. As a Tank Commander, it does, but when he was the only tank guy, not so much.
I still have a hard time seeing the Joe team with a large armor element and air force. It just strikes me as a rapid response unit, down and dirty, etc.. I just can't see them in large battles that require armor.

Here are the revisions I would have made for the '83 & '84 Joes:
Doc (E4) - as a combat medic, Doc would get to be in the thick of it Torpedo (O2) - warrant officers are technical specialists, and though valuable, they are less needed for typical combat/recon missions. However, making him E5 or E6 is a possible option. Ripcord (E5) - typically HALO ops are conducted by special operation forces or LRSU not just everyday paratroopers so I think he should have a higher rank. He could still be an E4 but making him an NCO puts more emphasis on his importance. Mutt (E5) - seeing as how he served as "cadre" to a special school, I can't imagine him being less than an NCO. Recondo (E6) - similar to Ripcord, a higher rank would suit him better, making him a Team Leader of a recon team as opposed to being just a scout. Roadblock (E5) - realistically if he's handling .50 cal he's probably a vehicle commander of an APC or similar, making him at least a Sgt. Spirt (E6) - like Snake Eyes, he served in Southeast Asia, left the military and returned to service, so he's most likely an NCO by now.

I just can't see them in large battles that require armor. This is sort of what I'm gunning for in terms of restructuring my Joe unit. But inclusive to this Regiment/Brigade are smaller, elite elements (ie, SEAL, ForceRecon, SRT, SF, Delta, Special Tactics) that specialize in counter-terrorism, CQB, UDT, HALO/HAHO insertion, Special Boat ops, Long-range Surveillance & Recon, VBSS, etc. This way you have a little bit of everything. Sort of like a brigade-size version of SOCOM.

I see G.I.Joe as a infantry/SpecOps based group, but with all manner of support (artillery, armor, air). When it started out in the early 80s it seems to be the size of a very small platoon but over time it grows to reinforced Company strength.
If I were to reboot the whole thing from scratch, I'd go with an Air wing that includes helicopters, maybe VTOL fighters, and C-130. Ideally, all the land vehicles would be small and light enough to fit into the back of a C-130. That means no heavy tanks, but definitely light to medium armor and possibly light self propelled artillery. |

Same with air support, stuff that doesn't need alot of airfield to take off from. My Joes pretty much fly the Tiger Rats. No Skystrikers or Conquests. I know it's blasphemy but oh well, it makes more sense in my Joeverse. The one exception I make is the stealth and my Joes have an AC-130.
