This reminds me of the online uproar when they made Starbuck female in the reimagined Battlestar Galactica series. Personally, I didn't care much either way, and I like the character. We already know they're not sticking to the same continuity as before, so this could be much the same.

Heh - I often think this when I read "Hasbro needs to listen to the fans!" or similar complaints online. Not always, mind, since many fan concerns are valid. But a lot of them just come off as pampered entitlement.

See that's just it. Joes didn't die until people started complaining about the lack of realism by not having any deaths, so almost out of spite, they said ok, we'll take a bunch of Joes that aren't really seen much and just kill them off without their deaths having been integrated into the story. When a character dies it should drive the plot in some way or be meaningful to the overall story arc, not just to satisfy deathlust or placate gripers.
Exactly. That's why Lady Jaye's death worked. It was plot driven and very meaningful to the overall story. The Trucial Abysmia stuff was just because they were doing it out of spite. Felt the same with the Cobra Island stuff in DDP and the Red Shadows stuff ("let's kill as many characters as we can so the threat of the Red Shadows seems even worse").

I remember reading somewhere that Hasbro let Hama kill off a bunch of characters that didn't have toys made - that he'd been asking to be allowed to kill some people for a while but Hasbro wouldn't let him, and then they finally did and that storyline was the result.

I hear what you're saying. However, the strength of the stories has always been dependent on character development. Larry Hama has always said so. And changing old characters into something so different than they were... well, I'm not sure all fans will embrace it.
Of course this is all conjecture - it remains to be seen how fans will react and whether or not they'll accept it. I just think that if the characters are so different from their classic versions, then even if the stories are good, it won't feel like we're reading G.I. Joe. I will certainly give it a try... I read every G.I. Joe comic ever put out (except reloaded). I'll read the new stuff. But I think of the time when DDP killed off Lady Jaye. There was a letter sent to DDP that they had the courage to publish. It basically said this, "That character has been around since some of you were in diapers. You have no idea what you're doing. I'm never reading another of your comics." I certainly felt that way, but I stuck around until the end. I'm not a huge DDP fan. I think they did some good things, but on the whole I don't think they ever really understood the property all that well. Funny thing about Larry Hama coming back - Some months ago, I read a post from a Tanker about the upcoming IDW series... He basically said, "Larry Hama is like Stan Lee. Thanks for what you've done in the past, but it's time for you to retire." I don't know if I'm ready to say that much yet, but I do see his point. People are changed by time. Who we are in our youth, is not who we are today... obviously there is some correspondence, but time changes us. George Lucas is not the same film maker he was - thus the new Star Wars is NOT what the old ones were. Hama's involvement may be a mixed blessing - he may feel the need to change things for the worst reason of all: the sheer novelty of being different. I was unimpressed by the 6 page preview of his... in fact, I liked the other 2 short stories much better. So, I suppose the most I can really say is: We'll see. But you have a point about Hama. You see in the beginning of the Marvel run everything has a much different (more realistic) feel to it. By the end with Ninja Force and Star Brigade it gets pretty lame, although it wasn't all bad. I don't know how much control he had by the end there. Even the File cards got Worse and less reality Based and more like he was writing them for a child audience. I blame Hasbro execs for this. I think Hasbro pulled the strings on what they were producing in toys and what Hama needed to include in the comics. The realness of GIJoe is what makes it cool. The gimicky cartoony spin Hasbro put on the line near the end of the Marvel Run and those DIC cartoons was meant for kids. That only works so long and then they are on to TMNT or Ben 10 or Bakugan. The more based in reality and on non-SuperHero non-(Monstro-Viper, Predicons, Star Brigade) the greater the fan appreciation of the product. It's based on what our nation is good at. Putting out world dominating, top-notch, total bad-ass soldiers. Something all young boys can aspire to become. How those joes became the cream of the crop is what makes them special/cool/ and appreciated. (And this is why the file cards are so important to the line as well) |

The story proved otherwise for both characters as they are so much stronger and better then their originals (sorry Dirk, you'll always have a special place but...). If it's not the same continuity, shake it up a bit and make it more relevant to today's times, as long as the core concept doesn't change.

Agreed. Boomer felt (at first) that was just done "to show in the future that women are as much a part of the military and just as important" and that out of all the characters, the one of Boomer was the easiest to switch genders. Starbuck felt (at first) as it was done for the shock factor.

It's like how upset people were that the Storm Shadow actor didn't read any reference material. I personally thought it was the right move.

That's true. Hama was always writing with his hands tied and did the best he could. Hasbro used to treat the old Joe series as a giant commercial for the figures/vehicles. That's why it seemed a new Joe or vehicle was shown every other issue. It got really bad with the Ninja Force/Star Brigade stuff. Look in Special Missions. Didn't introduce as many characters and was more realistic and grittier missions and stories. Those were what Hama really wanted to write.

I really hope Special Missions gets reprinted by IDW as part of their trade line.
