I see Joe training as just bringing folks up to speed on Joe equipment and SOP.
They brought Crankcase and Clutch onboard to be drivers, so I can't see them wasting time/money/resources training someone else to be one. I think they go and grab people that excel at the field they want, and then give them the "how to be a Joe" course. |

Talking about vehicle drivers. I got my POC Vamp & FURY from HTS today.
I was comparing my multiple Corps ATK80 Command vehicles with the POC VAMP and was surprised to see that the Corps version is almost an "Armored up VAMP". I was just wondering how everyone denotes their Multi-Purpose Attack Vehicles [VAMP]. So far I went with the Chevy truck idea of VAMP designations. A-1500, 25th Mk I (Mk II "Desert", Stinger, Tiger) A-3500, POC Vamp, A-4500, Corps Armored Up model

I like that set up Tanksmasher. Particularly for the selection process. I need to look into combining the Heavy Combat Brigade with a Marine MEB. (I like the Naval element as well) But I think you're right about the selection process being the key element. Then to become a named Joe they would complete the Joe School? This could be the Covert Ops School mentioned in the 82 filecards. What type of training would that be?
OK maybe not that far, but maybe the Armadillo and a FLAK cannon. But like you mentioned Humpty, being that they are named Joes, they would be expected to keep themselves in top shape. I think there would be lots of live-fire exercises for practice purposes. Occassionally the various Joe teams would pick up a greenshirt who was a support person and add them to their roster. Kind of like Mayday. Someone like Firewall would just stay Support. I think you would have older Joes move into more leadership/support roles if they are there long enough. I wish I knew more how Delta Force Training goes. They have some sort of ridiculous selection process that is 60-70% failure rate. I remember in the Kill bin Laden book he briefly mentions the training, but said it was up to the team Sgt Major's to decide what his team got. They are expected to be weapons experts and 90% accurate on a firing range, but most of these guys are such over-achievers they kind of train themselves. So I figure Duke; Stalker; Rock'n'Roll; Altitude; Gung-Ho; Mercer; Beachhead, and maybe Blizzard or a few other Master Sgts are in charge of their various teams training. These same guys and maybe Slaughter would all be on hand for the Joe Selection process, but guys like Fridge and Slaughter as Drill Instructors would be in charge of the average green shirt training and not the named Joes training. |

Anyone wanting to join the Joes would clearly have to pass some kind of assessment and selection process, similar to RAST (Ranger Assessment & Selection Process) or SFAS (Special Forces Assessment & Selection) to prove that they can meet the physical demands. The minimum requirements for selection might be a little higher depending on the field position the Joes are looking to fill.
That was a purely physical endurance test.

I like to think that Joe Indoctrination is similar to the SAS, lots of grueling physical exercise that strips the recruit to their base personality, weapons and navigation training and lots of psychological tests.
I was watching a documentary on the Australian SAS recently and they made each recruit complete a 2 page essay on who they were. All the recruits thought it was pretty stupid but then all the psychological evaluators and especially the cadre instructors used those essays to really grill those guys. They explained the aim is to strip a man down to his primordial personality free of bravado, false screens etc and really show who he is underneath. Also they wanted to see if things in their history would cause security issues and the like down the road. It was interesting that some guys were cut even after completing all the physical tasks simply because they carried an air of arrogance. |

I remember it well because I wrote that I was from a black hole of a town and joined the army to escape that hell. About 2 hours latter, a DI burst in to the barracks,, shouting, "Where is Huff, and why is he talking shit about my hometown!" Turn out he also went to high school with my dad. Ah....the beginning of a beautiful friendship...LOL. |

If the Joes are supposed to be a Tier 1 Special Operations Unit - and possibly even more elite than Delta or DevGru because they select from all the Branches - it seems that they would have to have a pretty extensive Selection/Evaluation phase, and then a pretty strenuous training phase to make sure everyone was up to speed on "the Joe way of doing everything" and operating all the Joe equipment. Plus, just learning to know/work with the other Joes - if they're anything like Delta or DevGru, they would operate in pretty small teams. So Delta S&T takes around 6 months... I suppose it's probably pretty similar for DevGru (does anyone know for sure?) - I would imagine that Joe S&T would take at least 6 months before they were assigned to the active Roster. It could even take longer because of all the Joes' weird equipment and mission parameters. It sort of like saying: "Yeah, you guys are supposed to be the premier counter-Terrorism/Special Ops Unit in the U.S. AND be able to do just about any job in the military in any situation". Army Special Forces Training can take up to 18 months... It might not be unreasonable for the Joes to be in "the training pipeline" for a couple of years.
