Makes me think about the Navy SEaL sniper that took out the Somalian pirates with a headshot from a STAB (I think that is what they were on). Impressive shooting.

Let's also keep in mind the difference between Snipers, who typically work in independent groups of twos or occasionally alone, and Designated Marksmen, who carry a scoped rifle of some kind and act as part of a regular infantry squad, just like a machine gunner or grenadier.
Of course, different wars and situations require different sharpshooting tactics. Anyone dynamic enough to join the Joes would be crosstrained in basic infantry tactics and would be solid at both working alone or with a spotter, and as part of a larger squad. There's a good book out called Sniper One about some British snipers in Iraq. They actually seem to have worked a little differently, a platoon of a dozen plus guys going on street patrols together or working defensively from the top of a building, and also using machine guns and regular rifles when the situation called for it. |

So Ive been wondering why there's no mention of any Joe training like a course needed to pass to gain access to the team. I really liked the idea in ROC and thought it fit perfectly. lets the old team members get to know the new guys while they train instead of a bunch of vets being dumped together and expected to get a long. Plus on going training. Does it stop because you are a Joe now? Does your skill set peak when you get reqruited? I want to say it seems that way because except for a few characters most seem to keep the same MO.

We talked about some time back. I can't remember if it made more sense for the Joes to be going to a Special Joe school or not. You figure the Joes are sort of an alternate reality Delta Force. Not the same but why would there be both?
I'm just saying like Delta Force, the joes would already be Ranger School grads or more than likely 75th Regiment members. Some Joes would even be Special Forces as well. Then they would have to go through Delta Force training. Not even sure what that is, but its more than just phsyical training. It seems to be up to the team Sgt Major to decide what training his team needs, like Combat Contol, demolitions, HALO, even motorcycling. Still I bet they must have to pass a monthly physical. Otherwise Sgt Slaughter will have their asses. But like Delta I guess your team Sgt Major will not let you get out of shape. There are 6 Joe Sgt Majors (7 if you count Beachhead) so I guess they would each get their own teams. Maybe this is the mysterious Covert Ops school that shows up on the original filecards.

I think the Joes would have a unit specific training course. They would need one in order to be able to integrate the tactics/training of the Army, Rangers, Green Berets, Marines, SEaLs, and all the other different units that come together in the Joes.

Cross training with each other would be vital I imagine. To take elites that are trained one way and teach them a universal code of signals (instead of their respective units) new weapons training, team building exercises to get them to put aside Marine/Army inequalities and turn them into Joes. Already mentioned weapons but the gear would probably be a lot more advanced so there'd be "class" time for a lot of this stuff. Tons of paper work and more class time to go over their top secret status, issue the papers, teach them what to do in the event of capture...etc etc. Probably get a whole nother battery of imunizations since they have to be able to deploy world wide, anywhere. (which most of them should have but I imagine Joe would have some vaccines against known Cobra threats a regular US military grunt wouldnt get)

It all depends on how you envision the Joes. If you view then as a highly elite but small counter-terrorist unit, then I think the qualifications just to apply should be high and there should be some rigorous selection process.
I, however, like to incorporate various elements, like aviation, artillery and armor, so I've structured my Joe military to resemble a Heavy Brigade Combat Team whose primary purpose is special operations and that functions like a heavy version of the Rangers. Candidates have to pass a selection process similar to RASP, at which point they become Greenshirts. However, Greenshirts are not Joe qualified until they graduate from Joe School and those who do not attend or pass the school cannot advance in the organization. This allows the Joes to have various personnel working in different fields in a much larger military unit. The Joe Regiment has its own Longe-Range Recon element and an attached aviation element dedicated strictly to the Joes and operating much like the 160th SOAR, except it includes a figther/attack jet element for Close Air Support and Recon and a cargo/transport element consisiting of C-130s and C-17s. |

I agree with this, but I don't think it would be along the same lines as the schools for Rangers, SEALs, SF, etc. All of the Joes are elite operators and would have been selected because they are proven commodities. I think that the "Joe-specific" course would be more along the lines of a probationary period. I imagine that they'd be introduced to the standard protocols and then they'd be put into squad or team sized units to accompany senior Joes on training missions. Make no mistake, the missions would be grueling and designed to make sure the newbies really belonged, but I can't imagine it would be the same as these other schools.
Just my two cents. Am I just rambling incoherently, or do you guys know what I mean? |
