I am all about a gritty comic and a real story, I didn't really like the sugar coated cartoon with how no one got hurt or killed and the laser look was lame to me. They always seemed to eject before the jet exploded or the tank with up in flames. I always gave the comic props over the toon

I didn't like that none of the Joes died in the comic either. Never made any sense to me, even as a kid. These were soldiers, getting shot at, etc.. Some of them were bound to die or get so wounded they couldn't continue to serve. Those Trucial Abysmia issues don't count, that was just a way to get a massive death count. Joes shouldn't have been dying all the time, but every once in awhile. I understand it was Hasbro calling the shots on that. The comic started out great, and kind of lost it along the way with everyone being somehow connected to Snake-Eyes and the whole Ninja-Force thing. DDP's stuff was bad to okay up until America's Elite, which was a good series. I have high hopes for the IDW series. It's already starting to show that it's meaner and grittier then anything before it. Which is what is needed in this new generation. The candy-coated series of the past won't play to today's fans. The recruitment story, where Hawk recruits Duke, was great. The Chuckles story was great. The main story was pretty good. Can probably guess my favorite part of the Dixon-story (Torpedo being used as a SEaL and not a diver!!!).

I too can't wait for everything new. I want every kid in America to put GIJoe on the top of their wish list. In 83-84 when it was the biggest toy phenomenon your parents and Uncles had to buy it for you. It topped all sales. Cabbage Patch dolls were second.
I think we'll basically be getting 4 different versions of figures going forward. The traditional lets call it "Collectors" line. Then the Resolute line. Then the Movie Line. And I guess we'll see new characters appear in the Comics. I suspect they will try to keep the characters the same over all mediums. Meaning Roadblock will now be Heavy Duty everywhere. We may never see Ripcord as we remembered him and Dial Tone is a girl. I wish I could find a web page I saw where someone's artwork basically reinvented all the dead characters as women. It was pretty cool looking. |

Yeah. The cartoon suffered from the A-Team-itis, where no one ever died or got shot. It was kind of stupid.

Chuckles, Flash and Mainframe. I think that was it, until the Red Shadows storyline, then it was Tracker, Rampart, Hardball, Glenda, Scanner and I think that was it.
But they did the same as the Marvel run. They did it in the "big" events. Kind of like a "see, we can kill characters too". I'm not saying that every mission should have had a Joe die, but it shouldn't have just been in the "big" events.

They're doing it with Transformers and it's working. I envision the 4 lines as well: collector's, movie, resolute and comics.

Lady Jaye was the only one that doesn't fall into the "mass killing to show we can do it" category.
Flash/Chuckles/Mainframe kind of made sense because they were during a massive battle and you expect casaulties during those. Yeah, the Red Shadow deaths were part of the storyline, but I just got the feel they were done for a "see, we're killing people" kind of thing.

Cobras: Skycreeper. Rip-it. Billy. Velocity. Firefly? Monkeywrench. |

The have skill and some luck on there side so they can get out of a jam and live to fight another day. Especially if a mission last serveal issues. Then you have a gaint battle/war where it's just no getting around mass death. Cobra have just puts in one good shot (Battle Force 200) or a series of tactical supremacy (Civil War 2) and the Joes just die left and right. |
