Looks very interesting, thanks Fogger.
Edit: In fact it was rather interesting as I've just read it Last edited by lardman; 09-09-2010 at 06:17 PM.. |

Are there any Joes from Nevada? I don't think I've ever seen Nevada on a file card. When I was growing up in Reno, I always wanted to see a Joe from Reno, Nevada. But what are the odds of that?
I always wondered what Shipwreck's middle name was too. Xavier sounds cool. |

I don't know if this has been covered before, but does anyone know when Hama stopped writing the filecards? Also, while he was writing them, was he doing all of them?

We've tried to figure to this out but according to some interview, Hama doesn't even remember what year he stopped. He claims that he doesn't remember writing Claymore's card and that it sounds like someone trying to mimic his style. So possibly he quit in 1986 and returned later for a bit.

Interesting. I always assumed he quit in 89, since they started using so many exclamation points in them from then on out.

I may have missed this in earlier conversation if it was brought up, but I found this fascinating:

Wow Fogger! This was excellent. Someone needs to front page this shit and send it to Hasbro while they're at it. Hasbro needs to go back to their roots on these. Straight from the creator's mouths:
"At first, [Hasbro] didn’t think that writing the dossiers was anything special," Hama observes. "In fact, in the second year, they decided to can me on them and get somebody in-house to write them. In two weeks, they called me back. It wasn’t as easy as they thought. You had to boil stuff down into two paragraphs, and it was hard to get it succinct and still have it be a real definitive character. It has to be in the right voice, and the military stuff has to be right." It seems like the link you put up Troy for Renegades seems to have good old dossier info like the file cards, (Still missing birthplaces). Maybe they are going back to fuller filecards?

Fuller filecards would be awesome. Birthplaces are a must. I don't think people appreciate that it can shape and nuance a person's personality.
I'm reading "The Killer Elite" by Michael Smith about the Intelligence Support Activity and there's a chapter that relates how growing up in Alaska shaped how a Marine Officer adjusted to patrols in Vietnam. He explains that all those nights camping in the middle of nowhere made his senses sharper and honed survival, tracking and field skills that 'never left'. It was during one patrol that he registered a faint trace of body odour and even though his marine and Indigenous compatriots didn't believe him, they followed (he was the OIC anyway) and they stumbled across a NVA encampment. Pretty amazing stuff. It's a very good book too. Highly recommend it. |
