There's also a issue with Scoop where Stalker training him on the ride to the insertion point( maybe a Special Missions issue). They talk about the dogtags in the bootlaces and having two bandages (one for the entrance wound, one for the exit wound). Scoop was pretty shaky in that mission.
...And as long as I'm in the vicinity of the subject, I've always objected to the idea of E-4's on the team. When I was in the Marines, I knew guys who made E-4 in under two years. I made it in 26 months. Rumor had it that some services it could be done even faster. How the heck does a guy with 2 years in the military work his way onto an elite counter-terrorism force? Know what I mean? Last edited by Sgt Humpty; 08-08-2010 at 12:07 PM.. |

I found this whole thing to be kinda ridiculous. I mean if Scoop were a civilian news reporter, then great. But he's supposed to be a guy that has earned his way onto the world's most elite SpecOps team. I think that this all came from Larry Hama recalling how new guys in Vietnam were shown the ropes and building it into the story. I'm not going all Anti-Hama or anything, but it is a rather silly thing when you think about it.

Know what I mean? In terms of rank, Passing the Q Course gets a promotion to E-5 for those who aren't there already. You do see E-4s in the SEALs, PJs, and CCTs. They're on the tip, not the tippy tip of the spear like Delta, DEVGRU and 24 STS.

I think we mostly agree with that DnJ. The E-4's are Greenshirts as far as I'm concerned. It's why most of the Joes to me have been promoted since then. Still this goes back to the Joe school of training.
I like to think most "NAMED" E-4 Joes have sort of made the cut and have gone on a few easy missions sort of as part of a larger backup team or something. Maybe they were slightly more exceptional in their craft, such as Dusty, Lightfoot, Frostbite or Alpine, that they were moved to the main unit early. With the understanding that they would be up for promotion soon. Same would go for the 0-2 Lts. Isn't there special consideration for college graduate enlisted men? Like they start at E-3? I like to think the Joes still need their E-4's and most would be experts at something. Possibly, and I hate to say, recruited straigth from civilian life, and went through Joe training. This would sort of explain Scoop, Quick-Kick, BBQ, Shockwave, Cannonball. Characters who seem to have gained their expertise outside the military. Another reason to add birthplaces back to the filecards, was that sometimes where a Joe grew up was the greatest reason for his exceptional skills. ie, Dusty, Muskrat, Pathfinder, (Any Arctic Joe except Iceberg), Gung-Ho, Steam Roller, Red Mack, etc.

But again - this is what I've come to like about the Joe community versus the Star Wars community. In SW, everything must fit into the continuity. In the Joe world, if you don't like it, you discard it from your Joe-verse! |

DNJ - dunno when you started posting, but welcome to the thread. I'm almost never posting here anymore (although I read everything).
I've been checking out your blog - cool customs. Do you ever take commissions?

Topics come back around all the time. Before I started reading the comics, I looked at G.I. Joe like a test unit. They combat tested new equipment before it got mainstreamed to the rest of the military. The CT part was Larry salvaging his old Fury Force project. The concept didn't fit the look of the figures, but it's what we have to deal with now.

I like that Joe is fairly open like that. You take who and what works for your Verse.

Fogger - I did Star Wars commission work years ago and eventually stopped because it sucked all the fun out of the hobby. It got to where I felt guilty working on stuff for me because there was always somebody waiting for me to do something for them. Ya know? But I recently did a piece for another former Marine and thoroughly enjoyed it. So I guess I do take commissions. If it becomes a strain again, then I'll stop.
