Notice that prior to Bombstrike, the Joe females were always some kind of intelligence and counter-intelligence role? Cover Girl was the exception but she got changed to intelligence in DDP's run. In a way I guess that was trying to be realistic but add females to the Joe troops.
I've always envisioned the named Cobras as being equals to the Joes. The Joes are the elite of the Special Forces. If the EELs and Vipers are Special Forces equivalents, that would make the named Cobras the elite of those Forces and then equal to the Joes. The only thing that makes a Joe a Joe and a Cobra a Cobra would be their morals. The comics and cartoon never made named Cobras that tough, always seemed weaker then the Joes. DDP's America's Elite (a great series IMO) helped make the named Cobras more of a threat. Zarana, Scrap-Iron, Wild Weasel, Copperhead and Firefly are shown to be equals to the Joes. Skullbuster goes toe to toe with Shipwreck (who's a SEaL in DDP continuity) and Cover Girl and almost wins. Major Bludd is more of a threat, even able to hold his own against Storm Shadow. The Plague are able to go toe to toe with the Joes.

They've been changing those in the newer cards. Any non-military secondary speciality has been changed, or at least most of 'em.
Cutter was a basketball coach, not sure if that's been changed. Haven't seen Alpine's 2008 card yet. Footloose was a basketball coach. Spearhead was an accountant as well. But those last two haven't been remade yet. Shock(wave)blast is now a Military Police Officer for SMS. Lady Jaye was originally a personnel clerk, her latest card has her SMS as armament repair. Her 2007 card had her as a personnel clerk. Dusty was refrigeration and air conditioner repair for SMS. He's still the same. That's kind of funny, never made the connection until now, but SMS was their Secondary Military Specialization and some of them had a pretty non-military specialization. Weird.

The Plague are able to go toe to toe with the Joes. I Think they need a convoy specialist like a Jessica Lynch figure. She can drive in a brand new APC carrier with Steam Roller. That's realistic. Or she can run a prison system (but that needs to be forgotten.) Firewall was a great character and Mayday seemed to fit the mold of Intelligence. Shooter was not realistic, since that role is not available for women. I saw in another post that Dial-Tone may soon become a woman in the new series, which sort of sucks but the role of HQ communications is certainly fitting. I agree with your sentiments on the DDP run. I had a much higher opinion of the named cobras afterwards. SkullBuster, Interrogator, Copperhead. I just wish we got to see more Big Boa. |

Re-do Big Boa has more of a mixed martial artist and he would have made a great trainer.
Yeah, the new Dial-Tone being female and being HQ communications fits. Lady Jaye and Scarlett are both Ranger qualified, but (correct me if I'm wrong) that's not a school women are allowed in. The military is still pretty sexist and I think it always will be to an extent. So that made Scarlett, Lady Jaye and the others even more special because they were able to rise above the glass ceiling and get the training they needed. But it's not that realistic. Yeah, a Jessica Lynch type Joe in an APC/Supply vehicle could be cool.

Speaking of Muskrat, and alot of Joes, does anyone know where the JWTC is? I'm haven't found much. It seems like it's been closed for over a decade. Is there a new one? There seems to be one for the Marines in Okinawa is that the same one? Wasn't there one in Panama?

As far as the Cobra Vipers go... I never thought specialty had anything to do with Rank in Cobra. Vipers are one type of Unit. Rock Vipers are another specialty. Range Viper may be tough, but they're just a different specialty; they're not a higher rank.
I think the named Cobras can function as leaders or specialists, but there probably aren't that many officers. Cobra is a tough organization and power isn't shared easily. I figure they die so quickly that there isn't enough time for a lot of promotion. Characters like Major Bludd, Firefly, and Zartan always seemed like independent contractors who were hired as needed. But even though they may not be "official" members of Cobra, they may be put in charge of Cobra soldiers if need be. For some reason Scrap Iron feels like an actual member of Cobra. Maybe it's his uniform. |
