Major has nothing to do with his Cobra rank. Major was what he was when got out of the Australian Service.
Major's a good rank cause it's high enough in the officer chain that he can be put in charge of the troops, but still have people over him; and it isn't that out-of-context for him to be field command as well. I don't think Cobra follows the normal ranking structure anyways. Besides everyone knows that you advance in Cobra through assassination and selling out your superiors. Well, at least I know that it operates that way. lol

I also wanted to pass on some info about the special ops unit in Transformers. Only Tyreese Gibson was AF, he would be a combat controler that was embedded with a SF group. I actually met one of these guys while I was in the Air Force, we went to a training school together. The way it works is that combat controllers from Air Force Special Ops were assigned to combat units from other branches and are tasked with calling for air support. You'll notice in the film that Tyreese Gibson is the one who calls for Air Support every time. The Combat Controllers recieve additional training from the Air Force in this field so that they can request the most appropriate ordinance to be used. Hope that clears things up.

Here's my take:
Now the top of the Hierachy is much like this: (keep in mind no one has ever died in my Cobraverse) Cobra Commander = King Serpentor = Emperor More or less equivalents although they try not to occupy the same space. CC hangs at Cobra Island mostly, Serpentor tries to do most of the fighting since he is a better stategist. CC is a better money maker. Destro = Marshall (0-10) Generals Overlord Tomax Xamot Gen. Mayhem (0-9) Lt. Generals Baroness Darklon Dr. Minbender Black Dragon Cesspool (0-8) Maj Generals Maj Gen Bludd Voltar Storm Shadow Dr. Venom Zartan Headman (0-7) Brig Generals Firefly Wild Weasel Alexander Destro Hannibal Interrogator CLAWS Commander (0-6)Colonels Mortal Scrap-Iron Night Creeper Leader Gristle Red Laser Venomus Maximus Big Boa Overkill Scalpel (0-5) Lt. Colonels Guillotine Snow Serpent Commander SkullBuster Cooperhead Zarana Lt Col Claymore Slice Rip It Crystal ball Escorpio Voador Neo-Viper Commander (0-4) Majors Zandar Dr. Knox Hotwire Skycreeper BLackout Croc Master Raptor Metal-Head Neuro toxin Razorclaw GhostBear Coil Crusher Hopefully that's everyone. Firefly and Maj Bludd have been employed for so long they don't really work for anyone else. Although Firefly rarely leads troop sizes large enough to be a General, he carries that rank and all its pay. It's more like a government equivalent. There are CIA agents that plan with generals and Colonels and their GS grades make them equivalents. Like most Terrorist organizations, Cobra doesn't have government ranks, but they hand out military titles like free taffy. Plus My Cobra Army is also a Mercenary Army so it's useful to rank as high or higher as the local commanders you are assisting. I mostly disregard the ranks we were given. I have one (0-6) Viper (Gold Sonic Viper) I use all the Version 1 styled Cobra Commanders as Cobra Colonels. Cobra Drivers are (0-2)Lts The various other Cobra Officers and Neo-vipers and Hiss drivers are Captains or Majors or Lt. depending on which ever I have the most or least of. The more I have the lower the rank. All Specialty Vipers are at least E-5 sgts. Range-Vipers and Alley-Vipers and Para-vipers and Snow Serpents are all E-7. There are no Warrant Officers but a lot of Sgt Majors. All Dreadnoks are paid as Sgt Majors except Buzzer who is a Capt. Pilots are a little different. But since they don't command troops they are not really in charge of anyone but themselves. Wild Weasel is the exception. |

I feel the same way so those named characters, like a skullbuster, had to make a name for themselves, through utter ruthlessness. |

As far as the Cobra Vipers go... I never thought specialty had anything to do with Rank in Cobra. Vipers are one type of Unit. Rock Vipers are another specialty. Range Viper may be tough, but they're just a different specialty; they're not a higher rank.
I think the named Cobras can function as leaders or specialists, but there probably aren't that many officers. Cobra is a tough organization and power isn't shared easily. I figure they die so quickly that there isn't enough time for a lot of promotion.

Nice work, Jon. I think that offers a lot of clarity. Could these USAF Combat Control guys also call in Artillery fire, or are they only for calling in Air Support? How rediculous is it to have Bombstrike doing this job? Are women even allowed? They are not allowed in Army/Marine Corps Artillery, or Special Forces.
