What do we think SE was before his possible move to SF and subsequently to SOG? Presumably he would have needed a primary infantry unit before moving to SF or can/could you go straight in? |

It also says that members came primarily from those arms of the service, so it doesn't rule out small numbers coming from others.

According to the dossier published in issue 108, SE "attended ...Airborne and Ranger school at Ft. Benning, and Recondo school at Nha Trang, RVN." So he had both Airborne and Ranger training before joining up with SOG.

I think all those guys who went to Nha Trang had to have Airborne training.

As an aside, while reading Osprey's Vietnam ANZACs, I see that the NZSAS (of which Beachhead is a member, on secondment to the Rangers, in the UK/European filecards) then had a maroon beret (I think they've gone to sand coloured like all other SAS units now).
I now remember that I did quite a lot of research when I got my original Beachhead figure (after I had translated the filecard from French, see my previous post with a link to my mix of UK/European filecards) and also discovered this fact. And it made me happy that the filecard + his beret agreed So yes, even 20-odd years ago I was a nit-picking so-and-so ;) |

The 5th SFGA essentially served as the cover for SOG operatives, particularly the ground recon element known as OPS-35. The men were all listed on the 5th's rolls but most of them had already served with the 5th. SOG's indigenous mercernaries had served previously with CIDG, MIKE Force or MGF, led by the 5th's SF men. SOG personnel went to Recondo training camps on Hon Tray Island, and those who were becoming One-Zeros went to Kham Duc which was later transferred to Long Thanh.

Wiki doesn't do a good job of explaining how other branches particpated though. The SEALs were a part of the maritime ops but they were primarily there to train non-Americans to drive Nasty boats up the coast. The Marines and Air Force provided air transport and assault helicopters for missions. The CIA was doing its own thing in Laos so that left SF to run the recon missions.

SE wouldn't have gone to Ranger School until much later when he becomes an NCO. Realistically he went to BCT, AIT, Jump School, and then went to Vietnam after a 30-day leave. In Nam he would have been assigned to a unit, say the 101st, where he could have signed on with a LRP company. However, he could have gone to SF right after Jump School, like many guys did, and although some SF did transfer to other units in Nam, including LRPs, it was not as common. So making him a LRP and then SF seems more probable, which is what I'm doing with in my story. I haven't decided where to fit in his Ranger School training, which could have come before or after his SF training. But not before his first tour.

Yes, when SE arrives in Nam he is assigned to the 101st and signs up to join a LRP unit. After his first tour ends he re-ups for another six months and is wounded and spends some time in recovery. When his extension ends, he returns to the states and he decides to extend his service and completes Special Forces, after which he requests to return to Vietnam where he learns about SOG and spends two more years running recon.

I thought One-Zeros were the officers. What's the difference in a One-Zero and a One-One? Different training?
