Actually, the other question to ask is whether the MACV-SOG orders at the time of the Tet Offensive were set just before, during or just after the traditional Origins storyline.
I don't know if you guys looked at where in the Vietnam war (time-wise) the SE Origins happened? |

Thinking through all this stuff, and the interest there is in writing filecards for both existing and new characters, I can't help but feel that writing larger documents (than can be contained in a filecard) might well appeal to a lot of people. E.g. something like an online service file which could be updated with both historical (i.e. date) info, training and also some of the stories/after action reports that people have in the filecards.
My thought here was that we could also include footnotes giving the justification/reference to books/comics/etc. for whichever school attended, dates, ages, etc, etc This thought followed on from my earlier thinking that a wiki would be useful to collate the vast amount of info (about all sorts of things, not just individual training possibilities) lurking in this thread, but pretty much inaccessible to those who don't know where to look (and we do occassionally get new people spring up in the thread, and other threads which are relevant - e.g. the "How old is CC" one currently running). But it needn't be a wiki (though that would be easiest), it could just be some flat html pages as long as someone can update them and handle updates from a number of people. Does anyone know if there is a wiki plugin for the sw running this forum/site? Or who to ask about this? P.S. I should probably add that my desire for organisation (and justification) of information is probably because I'm an academic and that's just the way I have to approach any papers/reports I write. Sorry! ;) Last edited by lardman; 05-20-2010 at 04:03 AM.. Reason: Add P.S. |

No that sounds like a good idea. Like the Joewiki site needs some serious love for sure. But most times there are better entries in wikipedia.
For example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snake_Eyes_(G.I._Joe) Snake-Eyes - G.I. Joe Wiki - Joepedia - GI Joe, Cobra, toys

That sounds like a great idea Lardman. Let me look into some stuff. Might take a big but definately something would want to do.

Quiet thread today. Where is everybody?
Stalker's beret?... he traded with Flint. That's the best explanation I can come up with ;)

I suppose if we could tie down the timeline of the Origins story wrt the Tet Offensive that would let me decide one way or the other. |

There were some aviation units for surveillance and transporting the SOG recon teams and there were some SEAL operations run in accordance w/ SOG but they weren't really apart of SOG, which consisted of SF running deep, covert recon in Laos and Cambodia. Quote:
That's what I believe happened. I think even the prototype figures had him with the camo beret.
Right this is my only problem with Stalker being SF in Vietnam. SF guys didn't usually work with LRP units. They did plenty of deep recon missons, but they were SF and they did lots of other things. Quote:
You're right. I don't know why I put that down. There was the 8 week Ranger School, just no Rangers yet. There is nothing that says any Joes went to Recondo School in Nha Trang. (Although I wonder about Gung-Ho and Recondo) I wonder what percentage of the SOG operatives went or had to go to Recondo school. Only like 3400 guys graduated from Recondo School.
Quote:
Hey Tanksmasher I figure you would know about it more than anyone else, went they formed the Ranger units in 69, they folded in the LRRP units? But I guess they just kept the units as independent companies with the units they came out of? Were those newly formed Ranger Units part of SOG then?
As for SOG, no one knew what they did except SOGers. Technically their missions were illegal. They were not supposed to be in Laos but they knew the NVA had extended the Ho Chi Minh trail across the border to transport supplies to southern Vietnam. So SF guys were recruited by other SF guys in SOG to run very dangerous recon missions with the help of indigenous soldiers like Nungs and Montagnards. Regular SF guys didn't even know what went on in SOG but they heard rumors and those who were curious enough and asked around were gently guided along and ended up working for SOG if someone thought that person was reliable and competent. I was just reading a book about the Mobile Strike Forces (MIKE) in Vietnam. Mostly just an overview of events, unit structure and actions they participated in.
I was looking for Stalker in a camo beret, when I looked at the old catalog. It's funny originally they were referred to as "Mobile Strike Force Team" YOJOE.COM | Catalog Gallery - 1982 Last edited by Tanksmasher; 05-20-2010 at 01:51 PM.. |

Definitely MACV-SOG, see image below.
Do we have justification of SE being SOG (other than this comic issue?) I was thinking along the lines of all three of them joining SOG and then being put together in a patrol and running LRRPs from there (no matter which unit they came from). From what I'm reading in the preceding posts, you guys are saying that you have to be SF to move to SOG...? I can see some reason behind that, but I thought SOG was a little less restricted by these kinds of rules and could presumably take people from wherever? So Hama probably guessed they operated like LRP teams. Another issue that reflects back to Tet Offensive shows Stalker, SE and Tommy going to the MACV HQ in Saigon, perhaps indicating that they were all joining up w/ SOG but in reality they wouldn't have gone to Saigon, they would have gone to CCN in Da Nang to join up w/ SOG but Hama probably didn't know that and he wanted to put them in the war during the Tet Offensive. Quote:
Yep that is certainly a reasonable explanation (are there any pics anywhere? Bellomo perhaps, I'll have to dig my copy out), but.... the comic shows him with a green beret, so are we saying that this was only done to match the toy colouring, despite Hama knowing it was wrong? Or could we use the SOG angle to sidestep it completely?
