I think the original toy design for Stalker had him wearing the camo beret. But like you mentioned Tyroc, why would he be a LRRP, if he was already a Green Beret? This is why I think he would have goen through Green Beret training after Vietnam. Particularly since he is not a language expert in anything related to the conflict in Vietnam, whereas Duke is an expert in 20 dialects. and speaks Han Chinese.
I just threw 101st out there Lardman. He could have been 82nd or 1st air Cav, or 173rd or what ever. I just figure he went to Airborne school so he's one of the 4 main Airborne units.

Alternatively, is it not possible to move to SF (in a field transfer, if such a thing exists?) and then return to your original unit on the next rotation (I've no idea, just throwing out a possibility). Quote:

I think once you go Special Forces (Green Beret) you don't go back, unless injured. Or like what Oliver has mentioned, they go to 4th Psy-Ops for a spell and then rotate back in with the unit. But 4th Psy-Ops is a Special Ops unit as well. (Probably because it's full of older Experienced Green Berets)
But I think if you were a Green Beret in Vietnam you were a Green Beret. You trained the LRRPs. The Recondo School in Nha Trang was run by the Green Berets. And everyone wanted to send guys there, just so they could be trained by Green Berets. This was before there was a Ranger School, or even Rangers. But even Marines went there, (Like Gung-Ho). But it's totally possible that Stalker went later, but while he was a LRRP I don't think he was a Green Beret. Because that would have been higher status. Sure the Green Berets performed Long Range missions, with their MIKE forces, but I'm sure they wouldn't call themselves LRRPs.

Issue 93 shows Stalker, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow arriving at SOG HQ in Saigon. I seem to recall Larry mentioning from time to time that Snake Eyse was part of SOG, so it stands to reason the other 2 were as well.

My understanding is once you become SF, you don't go back to being a "regular" soldier. if you wash out of the training, then you do. I think Delta is different, their members sometimes go back to being Rangers or Green Berets after a few years. I'm not sure about that, but I think I read it in the "Kill Bin Laden" book.

Yeah I read that too. That's what the Sgt Major did.

Yes I read that in "Inside Delta Force", he went back for the promotion (i.e. pay). Also officers go back iirc after some set period.

Yes, their being members of MACV-SOG would sort the issue as they could wear what they want and would also come from all relevant branches anyway. As that titbit is in the original Marvel comic run (and therefore canon), it'll need to be added to whatever backgrounds we've got for those guys of course. I'm happy that it does allow us to lay to rest the fact that Stalker is imo a Green Beret at the time he meets SE & SS in Vietnam. Thoughts? |
