Here's the other factor: When the Joes Started, they just wanted different "specialties". Stalker was already the "Ranger" for the Team, Snake-Eyes was the "Commando". So they probably thought, "Hey, we need an Infantryman" without realizing that "Ranger" really means "The Best Infantry". Clutch went to Ranger School, for crying out loud, the qualifications were all messed up.
If it's the latter then yeah, I understand the going for one of each speciality, but if we're really talking about an elite force, I don't imagine that's how it would be done (but the stories and filecards would probably become somewhat monochromatic, so fair enough I accept the mix) |

Are we talking about the "Joe team" that we envisage is what the story is all about (i.e. an elite fighting unit that doesn't necessarily need one of each and every option in the armed forces) or the Hasbro/(and to a lesser extent) Marvel team which wants to appeal to everyone and provide more story-making material by embracing all parts and arms of the armed services?
If it's the latter then yeah, I understand the going for one of each speciality, but if we're really talking about an elite force, I don't imagine that's how it would be done (but the stories and filecards would probably become somewhat monochromatic, so fair enough I accept the mix)

At the beginning of Footloose`s Filecard,it says that he was the Valedictorian of his high school,Captain of the track team and a Eagle Scout. He even went to college on a Scholarship to get a degree in Physical Ed. Along the way he dropped out and became a drifter. A few years later, while he was debating life in general,he decided to join the Army. He only made it to the rank of Corporal. He must have done something to get noticed by the G.I.Joe Team to get to join.

You'd think that a guy that was all that in high school was straight arrow. Then drops out of college and becomes a drifter. Then joins the military?
There's a story there.

Yeah, he sounds like a "Burn Out" who ends up on the Joe Team... that doesn't make much sense. I think that's why I used the Action Force version of Footloose for my custom team.

Footloose seems like a guy who's trying to find himself, to find something fulfilling, something that makes him feel he's making a difference, and maybe he found that with the people in the Army and not academia.

Here's the thing: It specifically lists Drop Zone as Special Forces, and it specifically mentions Sky Dive as a Ranger - so they obviously knew how to list Joes as Ranger/SF qualified if they wanted to.
But most of the Sky Patrol guys are just not listed that way. Altitude's file card is CRAZY - SGM of the Army?! Give me a break! Ridiculous. I think Static Line is an Engineer/EOD - and he may even have a Sapper Tab. I think Airwave is a Signal Corps/Commo Guy And I think Airborne is a Medic/Rigger All of them are excellent soldiers, but there's no evidence that the latter 3 are Rangers or SF, because to put that info on 2 of the file cards leaves the other 4 with glaring holes in their qualifications. How did we all get so "Ranger-Happy" all of the sudden? Did I start this? Shame on me. Yes. Yes you did. My point about Sky Patrol, which you yourself have asserted before and have thus convince me, is that senior NCOs with Infantry MOSs most likely went to Ranger SChool. The whole team is E-7 and above. Recoil is like Pathfinder. Spearhead has nothing really to convince me he's a Ranger School Grad. He is one of those few Infantry Joes, who almost seems like why would the Joes even bother. Grunt; Footloose; Hit&Run; and Spearhead. Hit & Run seems like a good recruit just based on the Mountaineering background. Most likely 10th Mountain, and a unit that gets a lot of action. still the term "Light Infantry" conjures up one word in my mind = RANGER. But filecard says nothing. Footloose has nothing, and a guy who goes out west to find himself has either drug problems, (Which he can't as a Joe, no matter what Falcon does) or girl trouble. Grunt as a Squad leader would seem like a great candidate to go to Ranger school. And I bet after his brief hiatus, he would have reenlisted and had to prove it to himself just to go to Ranger school. But nothing ever mentions Ranger. And back in 82 he was probably the first dumb schmuck to join, so he sounds like a guy who would forgo Ranger School to join the Joes. But you can make them all SAS Joes like Oliver. Hey what do you do with your Footloose and Hit & Run Lardman? Do you use them as their Action Force incarnations? I use DTC Footloose as Longslide, the Action Force "Footloose." I stole that straight from Tyroc. Hey where is Tyroc? And yes its true I have my head so far up E-9 Mercer's ass it's not funny. My theory with his E-9 V2 filecard is that he was just holding his cover as an ex-Viper when he joined the Renegades. Mercer being an E-9 makes no sense whatsoever, unless he really was an E-9 the whole time. And if he was, then most likely he went to Ranger School if he was in fact Army. But he could be a Marine for all we know or Navy? Where did he get the boat skills to escape Cobra Island? I also like Zuludelta's take on making him a government agent which would make him a WO-2 equivalent. But to find reason to explain his filecard rank I have him pegged as another of the undercover Joes. Now what about the radio guys?

I can see it now...
"Hisstank.com Proudly Presents... From the Nerds at "What Secrects Lurk in the File Cards?" The G.I. Joe Dossiers as they should have been: G.I. Joe - File Cards - Declassified" Starring: The Forums most prolific poster and founder of the thread - Troynos. Loose Cannon - the Joe-Maniac of Moscow... this guy would do a headswap with a Pee-Wee Herman doll if he could think of a new code name for it. Fogger1138 - The man who knows more about Copyrights than anyone else on the internet, and his knowledge of the comicbook industry is staggering. Tanksmasher - The man who once told an entire Forum where to stick it... and he was RIGHT! ZuluDelta - we don't see him much anymore, but we hope he'll do the artwork for this book ;) Topside - A great guy who knows WAY too much about aviation, but we're glad for the info. Lardman - who classes this joint up by being British Blackrazor - the man with info on nearly any subject that gets brought up... how does he keep his post count so low? & Oliverbox - the overly opinionated Chaplain.
