Yeah, I'm thinking Pathfinder would be a ranger.
Which brings me to Spearhead. What exactly is the role of a "pointman"? Is he a pathfinder like Pathfinder? Is he recon? Or is he just the guy that takes point when the fireteam goes out? So let's finish up Pathfinder and could we move on to Spearhead next?

Pathfinder is a done deal for me. No matter what Recon type team he came from he most likely went to Ranger School as an E-6. Maybe he's not 75th Proper Ranger, but he wears a Ranger tab.
Yeah Spearhead has so much potential, but basically nothing on the filecard. Nothing. He would make a great Marine. But the one unit in the Army most associated with the term "Spearhead" is 3rd Armor. He could be the mech Recon team member? But 3rd Armor has since been deactivated, although at the time Spearhead was made, they were still active and led the charge into Iraq in the first Gulf War.

A 'pointman' is just the guy at the front of the formation in an Infantry squad. Nothing very unique or special - every squad has a pointman. What convinces me that he's Ranger-qualified his what the file card says about his leadership ability. He's a natural leader. Ranger School is, above all else, a leadership school - one of the best combat leadership schools in the conventional Army. Any good Officer would have identified his leadership ability - checked to make sure he was squared away: good PT score, passed inspections, no legal trouble, etc... and developed that soldier's skills by sending him to Ranger School.

I want him to be a Ranger cause he's one of my favorites.

I think it's pretty reasonable to consider Spearhead to be a Ranger.
... the real question is if they let Max go to Ranger School with him. ;)

That would be just unnecessary cruelity to not let Max go with him.
Or did he get Max after Ranger school?

I don't think the Joes would have even looked at his application if he didn't have a Ranger Tab. They don't exactly serve "Fancy Feast" in those MRE's.

So let's finish up Pathfinder and could we move on to Spearhead next? Here's an official definition from the Ranger handbook: “...the PL [Platoon Leader] designates a point man and a pace man for the patrol. The pace man aids in navigation by keeping an accurate count of distance traveled. The point man selects the actual route through the terrain, guided by the compass man or team leader. In addition the point man also provides frontal security.” Last edited by Tanksmasher; 04-22-2010 at 05:41 PM.. |

Here's a typical column formation for a squad with point, pace and compass man positions assigned.
