Right. It seems like a more traditional M-16 or another assault rifle would have made more sense. But neither character is listed as an Expert Marksman. Now presumably, as Special Forces Officers, they would both be qualified "Expert Marksman". But a Shotgun needs to be used upclose, and it provides a larger margin for error.

Yeah, it's an odd choice. I can see having an M-16 or M-4 with an 'under' shotgun.
But just a shotgun? No, doe not compute.

I could even see giving them an extra shotgun. It could have been cool if a little shotgun had fit onto their backpacks - like Falcon's knife. That could have been a really cool accesory.
But are we honestly supposed to believe that Flint and Falcon are such lousy shots that they need a scatter gun?

And what is the tactical advantage of a shotgun in the types of missions they'd be involved in?
Not the best range. Not the best piercing. What's the point? A shotgun is a close quarters weapon and not very useful in a hostage situation.

Plus, there are a lot of alternate rounds that a Shotgun can fire. They make all kinds of rounds - flash-bangs, Explosive rounds, etc. Rifles can't do that. Plus, if they use scatter shot - close up it's very effective. So if they're clearing a room full of Cobras, that could come in handy. My feeling is this: I can understand how a shotgun could come in handy for guys like Falcon and Flint, I just don't think it should be their primary/only weapon. They need an assault rifle, and the shotgun could be a good secondary accessory.

The bravado of a sawed-off shotgun seems to fit Flint's personality pretty well but yeah, Falcon should have a more conventional weapon. Tunnel Rat maybe should have had a shotgun instead of that oversized gun he came with.
And come to think of it, was Flint's shotgun supposed to be sawed-off or one of those riot deals that are designed that way? On the original figure it looks to be sawed but the 25th version looks like a riot shotgun. |

Yeah, that's what I mean. Lots of uses for it, but as a main weapon??
Give 'em a good weapon with an 'under' shotgun or a smaller one attached to the backpack. Flint's backpack already has some dynamite, why not a shotgun. Good call on Tunnel Rat. Shotgun would be perfect for him.

Flint's Shotgun would hold 5-10 rounds max. That's just not practical in a fight against automatic weapons. It could come in handy every now and then, but not all the time - and not even most of the time.
Falcon served with "Blue Light" group which means he's got a lot of Counter-Terrorism/CQB training. A shotgun would come in handy for him, but not as a primary weapon. I think it would have been cool if they both had sawed-off shotguns that could attach to their ruck sacks. That would have been cool.

I think that Falcon is nothing more than a lame remake of Flint for some reason. Although a much need character in my mind. Green Beret Officer would be the short list for sure if I were to create the Joe team.
But I think it has more to do with Platoon. I think the only soldiers that used those were Foxhole grunts in Vietnam. At least when both characters were created that was the only conflict that saw shotguns in action. Like Bunny in Platoon. He had the Shotgun. I immediately thought of Flint. In a Trench or a Foxhole that is a pretty brutal weapon but effective when being overrun or kicking down a door to a room that ten guys are standing in.
