And I hate to say it, but I think most kids back then didn't really care. I think we're the exceptions. And Troy, let me just say that I'm loving the Post-bots. Changing it periodically is a nice touch as well. |

Thanks. I like it, lol.
Out of curiousity, did the love of filecards develop as a kid or as grew older? For me it was as I grew older and more of the things there made sense. So maybe the filecards aren't a kid thing?

I was a fan of the filecards pretty much from day one, but I think it took a few more years until I was really interested in the rank aspect. I know by the time the animated movie came out, I had come up with a rank/command structure for my Joes. I stopped collecting Joes in 1987, but I remember being in toy stores or toy departments for years afterwards and taking figures off the pegs just so I could look at the filecards. I was always interested to see which of my favorite Joes had been promoted.

Well, realistically speaking GI Joe is about individuality, rich characters, vibrant colors and uniforms, cool weapons and hi-tech gear. Budo is just another character that fulfills these criteria. Kids notice differences. They're probably not that interested in figures that wear the same uniform because they all start to look alike. And no military would realistically hire a samurai warrior (and do samurai warriors even exist), so I think Budo was just another attempt to create something new and cool. Compared to other Joes, I actually like his look. Of course he doesn't fit in with a lot of my more realistic-looking squads, but that's why I think he's best used for individual intel-gathering missions. The armor is just what he wears when he's training.

And to answer your question, I've always loved the stories told in Filecards, and as I learn and delve in deeper to prepare for a prospective military career, I find myself revisiting them and noticing things I hadn't before. Such as Ace's assignment to the now-defunct Tactical Air Command (now part of Air Combat Command). I wonder if he spent a lot of time flying out of Langley AFB...

I was always a fan of the stories, to be honest the rank was something I didn't pay much attention to as a kid.
The personality stuff, the training (to an extent, didn't really notice the wheres, just that they had all this training which made one cooler then the other) and the jobs.

While I liked to read the filecards as a kid, I didn't really process to much of the info. As I got older I enjoyed reading into the history of them more

So Marine_Deadpool and I are working on a custom USMC Recon unit. It's coming along really well. We're doing custom versions of most of the VERIFIED Marines on the Team.
1. Gung-Ho 2. Leatherneck 3. Mainframe 4. Hollow Point 5. Lt. Stone (Extreme) 6. Mace (I know some of you contest this, but frankly those arguments don't make any sense) ;) The one old Marine I'm missing (besides the 2 RoC Marines) is Sgt. Slaughter, and that got me thinking... Obviously, the cartoon version is a Joke and he didn't have much of a role in the comicbook. But let's just look at his file card. Although it makes mention of his time as a Drill Instructor for Basic Training, it lists his specialty as a Drill Instructor for Infantry Training. It also lists him as a Survival Instructor. Now if he's qualified to Train Infantry Marines, and to teach Survival skills - and I really don't think his hand-to-hand combat skills should be overlooked (that's the whole point of the character), the shouldn't that add up to a really tough Marine. If he's an Infantry Drill Instructor, wouldn't he have to be an expert marksman and knife fight, a black belt in Gung-Fu, and pretty much everything the Marine Infantry does? Those Marine DI's are legendary. And if he's a Survival expert, wouldn't he be pretty proficient at field craft? Combine that with his size and athleticism... suddenly this character is not really that much of a joke anymore. The point I'm making is that he's consistantly listed as an E-7 in every file card. And with those qualifications, I think I can make a pretty good custom figure of Sgt. Slaughter. Obviously he can't be out on patrol with a Campaign hat, but If I'm able to get a good moustached head and find a good helmet for him, I think this could work.

Other Tankers show up here all the time and ask a question, and we're just excited to have something to discuss and track down. We bat an idea around, and usually come up with a fairly plausible answer that honors the continuity, respects the military reality, and is creative. Hasbro is missing a golden opportunity. They don't even have to pay us. If they named some Joes after us, that would be awesome... but we make the idea of them hiring a person obsolete.

That's an interesting idea about the custom, OB. I'd like to see that.
And as ofr Hasbro coming here to rack our collective brains, I'm not entirely sure that's legal, or something like that.
