That must have been where I got the idea. I was going to incorporate a Chaplain character into my J.O.E.verse but someone never got back to me when asked for help Was going to name the characte Shepard.

I always saw him as a Green Beret (not least because that's what he wears all the time!).
As an aside, you guys in the US have a surplus of "special forces" (as opposed to our SAS, SBS and Paras) and it's quite hard to work out the relative difficulty of joining\moving on from any of them. Anyway, from my (admittedly lacking foreign understanding ;) being a Ranger, or Special Forces (i.e. Green Beret) seemed like it would be a natural progression to join the Joes. Navy SEALs seemed like they'd be taking a sideways step (same sorts of skills and ops, but they have specialist skills so would be useful to GI Joe), and Delta seemed to do pretty much the same thing so the question is would anyone migrate from Delta (assuming Delta even exists in the GI Joe universe)? In the U.S., we have Tiers of Special Ops units The top tier - Tier 1 - is Delta Force, the ISA, DevGru, and the 24th Airforce "Whatever it's Called". All these units are primarily focused on Counter-Terrorism, but they do all kinds of missions. They are roughly analogous to the UK's SAS/SBS/SRR. They are our "best of the best of the best", but there are very few of them. Delta = SAS DevGru = SBS ISA = SRR Then in our Second Tier, we have Army Special Forces (Green Berets), Navy SEALs, Marine MARSOC. These guys are really the backbone of our Special Operations. They do differnt missions. Then in our third Tier - Air Force Pararescue, and Combat Controllers. Army Airborne Rangers, 160th SOAR, 4th Psy Ops, 95th Civil Affairs, etc. The Rangers are sort of the exception to this bunch - they are the Sharp end of the Stick, so to speak. The Rangers are almost like Army Special Forces, and are excellent Fighters. They just have a more traditional Infantry mission. The rest of these units act in Support roles for Special Operations. The Rangers are roughly comprable to the Paras/Royal Marines.

Nice you guys kept going. I had to go to bed.
Nice find Blackrazor on the Club Ice-Viper. The usually do a great job incorporated various elements of the figures and characters to their filecards. I can't wait to see the Red Shadows filecards. What was Black Major? Royal Marines or SBS? I don't recognize ISA either. Is that SAD?

They're about half spooks and knob turners and half shooters. They're also known as "Grey Fox" "The Secret Army of Northern Virginia" "Centre Spike" etc. They change names every few years. My Avatar is their logo.

Are the Royal Marines really better than the Paras? I always considered them to be similarly elite and tough. Both units are very capable. My understanding is that the Paras are very favorably comprable to the Ranger Regiment, and the Royal Marines are similarly comparable, but from an amphibious point of view.
What's your opinion? |

My feeling is that the Royal Marines are the "more elite" force (they are Commandos after all ;) - their selection and training process is apparently one of the longest in the world and includes mountain warfare as well as amphibious; some are also para-trained (so there is a range of specialisms). Anyway, just my opinion.
I've heard several U.S. paratroopers compare the British Paras to our Rangers. If that's true, those are some tough guys. From what I've read, the Royal Marines are WAY tougher than our regular Marines. One writer I read said this: "(U.S.) Marines claim that they are as tough as the (U.S.)Army's Ranger Regiement. This is an exageration. A better comparison would be the USMC and the 82nd Airborne Division. However, the Royal Maines are basically Amphibious Rangers. They are well trained, and extremely tough. And trying to decide between the Royal Marines and the British Paras simply boils down to the parameters of the mission and the enviroment into which troops are being deployed."
