In the vertical position, I'm assuming that the rotor blades move cyclically the way helicopter blades move, which allows forward, rearward, and lateral motion. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 04-07-2010 at 11:12 PM.. |

What never ceases to amaze me is aircraft carriers.
How something that large and heavy, and so lopsided, can float on water on such a thin point. How it doesn't roll over is amazing.

Oh definitely, the science of ballast itself has to be pretty complex and even a bit experimental when it comes to balancing these floating runways.

We're working on it. There will be an update coming very soon, but he's been busy and so have I. I'm going to make a very big claim: By the time we're done, I think this will be the most ambicious custom project (figures) ever seen on Hisstank. I know that's bold, but I think we're going to back it up.

The V-22 is certainly an interesting bird. I'd be interested to see what the emergency procedures are for an engine failure during rotation of the nacelles. Horizontal flight must be pretty slow during the transition so Vmc must be pretty low or else the aircraft would just turn over on itself during an engine failure.

What's VMC? I think the first few accidents involved engine failure and the aircraft turning over. But they somehow compensated for that so that it can finish the transition with just one propeller/engine and thus glide into a crash landing like a fixed wing aircraft.
An instructor and some students were killed the previous year doing the manuever because they miscalcuated Vmc, which varies with weight and atmospheric conditions. It was too low, below the aircraft's stall speed, so when they demonstrated Vmc, they stalled at the same time and spun the plane into the ground. Due to the fact that four people and one of the student's dog was in the plane, the spin was fairly flat and could not be recovered through normal spin recovery procedures. As a result of the accident, the school said that all Vmc demos would only be conducted with two people in an aircraft, not four. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 04-08-2010 at 12:41 AM.. |

I knew there was some furore about this aircraft, and iirc it was going to be canned, but I'd assumed that as it's still with us, these issues had been fixed. But apparently not...
Just doing a quick Google browse of V-22 Osprey engine failures throws up lots of information, e.g. Why the V-22 Osprey is Unsafe http://www.cdi.org/pdfs/gailliard%20on%20v-22.pdf Now I don't know how authoritative these are, but they mention some interesting problems. I had actually been wondering how the pilot could handle a single engine failure when the engines were near vertical (other than to disengage the good one too and autorotate in), but now it looks like that might also be a serious issue! |

There is no doubt that VRS vortex Ring State is the biggest problem for the Osprey. The Army only has 7, the Marines however have 156 with over 500 planned?! Supposedly the pilots are all trained for just that event which apparently they were not at the onset.
Still I think the argument that deploying in a hot LZ must be looked at differently. I'm not aware of Osprey deployment tactics, but it's too fast for a helicopter escort and it's range is double any helicopter. So it shouldn't be landing in a hot LZ. I figure if it has to land/descend so slowly, it compensates by having the benefit getting to the LZ twice as fast as any other helicopter can. It definitely isn't perfect. And it's price tag is double the next helicopter.

Wow, it didn't seem to me that it could autorotate on one engine and indeed it has no single-rotor autorotation capability according to the article. That's a dangerous element when operating like a helicopter near the ground. Basically the pilots just have to absorb the impact--and a hard one at that. I'm sure the seats can withstand a certain G load but still...
