Well from my notes and research I hadn't found any use of units called LRP or LRRP after 1969 in the US military. Provisional LRRP units were reorganized into LRP companies in 1967 and these companies were later redesignated Ranger companies in 1969. Today's long-range recon units in the US military are referred to as LRS (Long Range Surveillance). But if you have evidence showing the contrary I'd appreciate the information or link to add to my notes.

After several hours to reflect, I just want to apologize for taking this thread down the Low-Brow Comedy path... We're better than that. This isn't a Headman or Classified Thread. Sorry for the interruption, guys.
So now back to file cards: Let's talk about Paratroopers. Crazy Legs and Free Fall - they're both listed as Airborne Rangers, and they're both from the Mid-West. I wonder what prompted this change compared to Airborne and Rip Cord, who were never explicitly listed as Rangers.

Maybe someone got to them and said "guys, these jumpers should be rangers"

Airborne confused me in the past. The file card definitely says he's airborne, but he looks air assault and his description is helicopter assault trooper.

Both of those characters, however, seem pretty great. Crazy Legs is a classical pianist/organist, which obviously indicates a tremendous talent and intelligence. And he's also a "Forward Observer" for Artillery... that's pretty impressive - AND USEFUL. Free Fall, in addition to being an exemplary Airborne Ranger, has a Masters Degree in Eastern Philosophy. As Tanksmasher and I mentioned earlier, I'm sure they want Joes who are well-educated, and capable of operatiring as individuals and thinking outside the Box. Both of these guys are pretty impressive, really.

Yeah, I figure he's "Airborne" like the 101st is "Airborne"... But it was the early 80's, and I think the Army was still calling it "Air Mobile" - it would be a few years before they called jumping out of Helo's "Air Assault"... actually, "Air Assault" wouldn't be a bad name for a Joe.

Speaking of education. I thought it was interesting that Tripwire, according to the first file card, was a high school dropout.

But, I've met more than one senior NCO who was an adolescent delinquent. I honestly think that the Army did more good for a lot of young men than jail would have done for them. I always figured Stalker may have joined the Army under similar circumstances.

I guess this should be posted here, and maybe it was talked about before buuuuuuuuuuuuuut....
Deep Six, his filecard basically states that he was head of the class in divers school and he "held his breathe the longest" etc. Being that he is the S.H.A.R.C's driver...should'nt he at some point have had some sort of pilot's training? I mean within my imagination and the Joe-Verse I could just write it off as "he was briefed and trained on a S.H.A.R.C and that is that" Seriously though, it flies. He has to have some sort of aviation training. He's a diver, sub operator and pilot...it touches on nothing but his diving and reclusive demeanor. Who taught this guy how to fly? And fly in combat for that matter?! |
