Nothing in Bellomo's book about Leatherneck rank changing, and he's usually on top of stuff that Hama originally suggested and stuff that got changed in the figures.
I wouldn't stick to the years that much. Remember, Hama retconned in the Frontline stories that introduced Shooter, he had Wild Bill and Ace as early Joes same time as the original 13 and in the Marvel run he retconned it so Doc was around the time SE had his accident. So I'd just go off the filecards and which ones seem like they would have been in 'Nam.

Not to rain on your parade, but isn't this the kind of stuff that keeped Stalker off the Special Forces list earlier? Flint is a senior member of the Joe team rank-wise and has always been Special Forces. Dusty still has nothing other a beret that matches his new uniform.
Stalker is the same way, but I also added him to my Custom ODA Team Stalker and Dusty may not actually be Special Forces qualified in the official Joe continuity, but that doesn't mean they can't be in my Joeverse. All I'm arguing is that it's possible for them to be SF. Yeah, it's a little ridiculous. That's happened with a few characters: Rock & Roll comes to mind; he was listed as an E-9 in his Sonic Fighters file card. It's just another point of the continuity that Hasbro should keep better track of. Irritating.

So I'd just go off the filecards and which ones seem like they would have been in 'Nam. I kind of see the original 13 as the first "training class" for GI Joe, not the first operational unit. So after this class came another class containing the Joes of 83 and then the Joes of 84 and so on. Then after several classes of people were trained, GI joe offically became operational. This way, there is some chronology as to which Joes signed up when. Also, I like to believe that there were other Joes around (not just greenshirts who are merely support personnel)--but Joes that were running other missions parallel to the missions of the Marvel series. In other words, just because you read one book about a particular SF ODA that doesn't mean there weren't other SF ODAs running simultaneous missions. Their stories just haven't been told yet. |

Jonathan Hickman just did that to good effect in Marvel's Secret Warriors. So far we'd only seen one of Fury's teams, but now it was just revealed that there are 3 others operating, we just hadn't seen 'em yet.

Can we talk about Spearhead for a minute? As I've been trying to get together a list of Rangers and possible Rangers, I've had to give his file card a more thorough review.
Now, before Blackrazor calls me out for claiming something is there that isn't, let me be clear: There is nothing in his file card that explicitly says he is Ranger qualified. No hard evidence at all. However, what is emphasized is that Spearhead is a Point man and a natural leader as an Infantryman... the guys in his unit would follow him anywhere. Ranger School is the ultimate in small-unit Infantry Leadership training for the U.S. Army. A Ranger Tab says, "I'm a Leader, Follow Me!" It seems to me that any point man, who possess such obvious natural leadership skills (if he wasn't sent to OCS), would be a natural choice to be sent to Ranger School. Leadership in the Infantry can't run on bravado and humor alone. Expertise in field craft, soldier skills, physical fitness, and qualifications come into play. It seems that if Spearhead is as much of a "leader" among other enlisted Infantryman, it's most likely that he's Ranger qualified. Thoughts?

I'd buy Spearhead as a Ranger.
But then I'm biased as he's one of my favorites.

Nothing. Original name of First-Wave and different original filename (nothing major about it).
Around that time the added info was down to nothing.

Being a pointman wouldn't make him a Ranger per se because every infantry squad or platoon or recon team has one. He's usually one of the most experienced (but not necessarily the highest ranking) individual in the unit and he's good at what he does. He does lead in a sense but he's not necessarily the leader of the unit who may walk the slack position or even further back when on patrol. But since he's a GI Joe and I'd like to believe that they have high standards, I think it's possible that he may be a Ranger. I don't think there's enough circumstantial evidence either way but I wouldn't rebut it. ;)
