Given the medium of cartoons and comics, I think the standard for maturity or realism on average is always much lower than found elsewhere. Is there a cartoon out there that marks the maturest end of the spectrum, I wonder. If so, it would be useful for making contrasts between those that barely miss the mark or completely fail to even come close.

Just enough of the earlier guys to represent various units involved in the military at the time. I see it as a way to explore an individual character's background and training but I have to remind myself that too many characters is gonna make for one convoluted story.

How many do you have now? Maybe give your self a hard ceiling of 30-40? How many are known vets? 15? 10?

Some of the Joes like Stalker and SE and Wild Bill and Duke obvisously were there, as illustrated by Hama, so I'm including them, but I'm also interpolating the file cards to include others like Recondo, Ripcord, Rock N Roll, and Tunnel Rat. The story will also provide a rationale for the development and recruiting methods of GI Joe--mostly recommendations given by Stalker who met and briefly served with many of the other Joes, who also then recommend others that they served with either in Vietnam or later engagements. Plus it's a darkly interesting and controversial time period to place them in. It's a way to answer questions like, Which of the Joes were volunteers, drafted, anti-war but turned patriotic or patriotic but turned against the war. What kinds of learning periods did they go through? What mistakes did they make as newbies? What courage did they find or lose? Were there any dark moments that they struggled with?

Probably all the joes pre-1986 wouldn't be too old. Then just Payload and Repeater after that. Maybe Courage and Flagg as well?

"Mustard stains" is slang for service stars... they are accoutrements that are added to Army parachutist badges to signify that the wearer has taken part in an officially recognized "combat jump."

However, there are some things I just can't explain, like how Leatherneck was a Tech Sgt in Vietnam when that rank was discarded and changed to Gunnery Sgt in 1958. Surely Hama, a Vietnam Vet, would have known there were no tech sergeants in the Marines. So I'm guessing he didn't write all the file cards for this year or perhaps there were some editorial changes or perhaps other co-authors helping with the cards and this mistake escaped Hama's attention. |
