Just wanted to touch base with the whole airbourne and HALO jump thing. After speaking with a couple of the SF guys I found out some interesting facts.
1. HALO jumps happen all the time, we never hear about them, but one told me he did 15 mission jumps in 2009. Couldn't say where though of coarse. 2. Because of HALO and Night Ops, Airbourne units haven't been necessary in most situation. Typically the US, Australia, Russia, China, Isreal, and the UK have the ability to get people in and on the ground to secure an area before anybody knows what is going on. Which leads to 3. 3. The last Unit to get mustard stains on their wings was 1st ranger regiment, jumping into Iraq.... however the 'combat zone' was all ready secured by 5th SFG. Before that the previous unit to jump was an airbourne unit out of Itally durring desert storm...who also jumped into a secured area. 4. SF guys don't get mustard stains for HALO insertions into combat. |

I was wondering since we like the Transformers Military Forces. Why not use a GI JOE inspired Colonel Sharp for the US Marines. Roberto Orci confirmed at Botcon 2007, that they couldnt use anyone from the GI JOE team because of the live action movie was in the works. So during the Q & A time I asked, "Was Colonel Sharp inspired by the Colonel Sharp of GI JOE?" he answered 'Good catch' and that they were both followers of both entities during their youth and they tried to sneak something in for the other entity. I guess legal concerns made the answer vague.

I've been using the Venom V Valor Abernathy as Sharpe. I feel like the garrison cap just says Marine to me. Of course the figure has 3 stars on the cap so it makes my Sharpe pretty high up.

Now, I'm going to make a bit of a strech here:
This version of Dusty was issued with a Green Beret, and his language skills were already established in earlier file cards. Now it mentions Flint as his partner on his file card. Now, Flint had been established as a Desert HALO jumper in his previous 2 versions at that time, but he was always listed as Special Forces. So I'm going out on a limb and saying that this Convention "file card" adds to the circumstancial evidence that Dusty is Special Forces. It's certainly not conclusive, but it's good enough for me to add him to my ODA Team - and I've been working on the figure. I think it's going to turn out really, really well. What do y'all think? |

Yeah there isn't anything that says RIpcord is Army. I wondered the same thing like why wasn't he in the Air Force? It doesn't mention the military at all on his filecard, which I thought was sort of lame. He went from High School to GIJoe! To me the mystique of the Paratrooper led me to think of him as at least a Ranger. But the whole line of "What he does when he hits the ground you don't want to know about." gives me the impression of Green Beret or even Delta Force.
YOJOE.COM | Filecard Gallery - Ripcord I was going to try and refer to the ROC Ripcord's filecard, but I almost started crying reading those worthless pieces of #&$*#$@!!!!! |

Heh. The way I avoid that effect is to just put on "critical blinders" when watching it. Just take it for what it is and focus on the parts I enjoy (the technical animation and most of the character and prop designs) and pretty much ignore the parts I don't like (the writing, the bulk of the voice acting, and some of the directorial/storyboard choices). Otherwise I'd just tear my hair out.

It depends on what you consider mature for a cartoon.
Is it the level and depth of storytelling? The animation? The graphic nature of the program? Lack of silliness (which would rule out a ton of anime with the overexaggerated faces that drive me crazy)?

Given the medium of cartoons and comics, I think the standard for maturity or realism on average is always much lower than found elsewhere. Is there a cartoon out there that marks the maturest end of the spectrum, I wonder. If so, it would be useful for making contrasts between those that barely miss the mark or completely fail to even come close.
The thing about the animated features that come out of Japan and Europe is that those places don't necessarily view cartoons as "just for kids." So there's a lot more diversity in terms of subject matter that's tackled in their productions. Unfortunately, here in North America, the longstanding opinion is that cartoons are just for kids or "man-children" so even when foreign animated features are officially brought over, they're invariably bowdlerized or the selection of official imports are generally skewed towards the toy-centric, "crazy action," or worse, the "creepy otaku" genres. As far as from a story and storytelling standpoint I thought the HBO Spawn series was excellent.

Yeah, this has made me rethink how I want to use Rip Cord in Vietnam. Obviously there wasn't much paratrooping going on, so I thought of using him as a pathfinder but also considered making him Special Forces since demolitions is his specialty and later he could join SOG and partake in the first combat HALO jumps, thereby earning his rep as a HALO jumper.
