My 1980s cred will take a hit with this admission, but I've never actually seen Red Dawn in full. How'd the USSR and Cuban planes get past US air defenses? Or is it the type of movie where there's a lot of leeway for logic?

I forget if it was even mentioned. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Red Dawn. Awesome movie (and god I hope they don't butcher the remake, but I'm not sure how they can even make a remake and still have it be Red Dawn). But logic and that movie have no place together.

Oh, and another thing that's often forgotten when talking about the factors that contribute to the current doctrine that views large-scale combat airborne operations in a somewhat negative light is the development of affordable and accurate transportable air defense systems.
Back in World War II, there wasn't really any reliable defense against airborne infantry insertion. A C-47 Skytrain could fly well above the effective range of all but the heaviest and most powerful 1940s German ack-acks. These days, any jump into hostile territory has to take into account the possibility that surface-to-air guided missiles and other modern air defense artillery systems might take out the ferrying aircraft as soon as it enters hostile airspace. That and all the machine gun emplacements that would just rip the jumpers to shreads.
Am I the only one picturing a scene of an enemy unit jumping in to attack an airfield and a single jet flying thru the air wiping out the entire attacking force with just it's guns?

Logic goes out the window.

Awesome movie (and god I hope they don't butcher the remake, but I'm not sure how they can even make a remake and still have it be Red Dawn). But logic and that movie have no place together. ...Its a great movie, but there are alot of things that don't add up. I can only assume that alot of our military was killed off in the initial Nuclear part of the war... The Air Force Pilot tells the American rebels that its The USA Europe and whats left of China VS. Russia, Cuba and the rest of the Communist nations. Apparently the Russians nuked the Chinese early in the war, and now there is only 600 million Chinese left. So they join the Allies against the Comunists powers... Other parts that don't make sense: 1. Why the "Wolverines" just give up near the end. 2. How an Abrams tank could possably miss a soviet T-72, while firing across a clear battle field. 3. Why the Wolverines don't agree to try and link up with allied special forces. 4. How a Russian HIND attack helicopter can survive a direct hit to the engine from a RPG-7?????????!!!!!!!!! |

Guys, not to rain on your "Red Dawn" parade down memory lane, but I'm going to change to subject - to file cards.
So the 2002 Convention paratrooper figure (also called Dusty v6) was a figure with a Green Beret, and they used the Dusty v3 mold to make him. He came with nothing except a backpack and a parachute. Here's what Yojoe.com says about him: "Dusty was given to attendees at the 2002 G.I.Joe Convention "Legacy of Valor" at Norfolk, Virginia. He did not include a filecard... Though this figure was long known unofficially as "Paratrooper Dusty," it was not until the July 2009 issue of the Official G.I. Joe Collector's Club newsletter that this character was officially named as Dusty in a dossier within its pages. It is from this dossier that Dusty's specialty derives, as well." So, I looked up the newsletter and found the "file card" in question: G.I. JOE: DESERT PARATROOPER Code Name: DUSTY Filename: Tadur, Ronald W. Primary Military Specialty: Infantry/ Paratrooper Secondary Military Specialty: Refrigeration & Air Conditioning Maintenance Birthplace: Las Vegas, Nevada Grade: E-4 DUSTY feels totally at home in the desert, but he also knows that it is an unforgiving environment to those who take it for granted, unlike his hometown of Las Vegas which is always willing to give you a second chance. DUSTY was working as a refrigerator repairman and studying desert ecology at night when his pre-enlistment application for the G. I. JOE team was approved. He took his Army Basic Training at Fort Bliss in Texas and loved every minute of it. DUSTY trains hard to keep himself in top physical condition, and he is not too proud to ask FLINT, the more experienced team member, for tips in field craft and parachuting tactics. He knows that simply making it through the day in the harshest desert conditions is extremely difficult, especially if you are carrying up to a hundred pounds of weapons, ammo, food, water, and equipment. To DUSTY, it's just a stroll through his back yard. He doesn't fight his environment, he coexists with everything it has to offer: snakes, scorpions, dust storms, even the extremes in temperature from day to night. "Nothing beats getting the drop on the bad guys in the middle of the desert." Standard Equipment: - FAMAS G2 (assault rifle with bipod) - M-1911A1 (.45 caliber pistol) - Parachute pack

Now, I'm going to make a bit of a stretch here:
This version of Dusty was issued with a Green Beret, and his language skills were already established in earlier file cards. Now it mentions Flint as his partner on his file card. Now, Flint had been established as a Desert HALO jumper in his previous 2 versions at that time, but he was always listed as Special Forces. So I'm going out on a limb and saying that this Convention "file card" adds to the circumstantial evidence that Dusty is Special Forces. It's certainly not conclusive, but it's good enough for me to add him to my IDA Team - and I've been working on the figure. I think it's going to turn out really, really well. What do y'all think?

The modern risk really is in the transport being particularly vulnerable to SAMs. One of the reasons the USSR was hesitant to deploy their Airborne Assault Brigades during the early stages of the Soviet War in Afghanistan was because they were worried that the CIA (via Operation Cyclone) had supplied the mujahideen with Stinger missile systems. In fact, the threat of Stinger missiles was a major factor in changing the complexion of combat. A lot of the principles of USSR's modern "deep battle" doctrine became largely untenable without the advantages of airborne and air assault and the Soviet Union was forced to fight (and eventually lose) an unconventional ground war against guerrillas who had mastery of the local terrain and geography. |

Works for me.
I can see Dusty as Special Forces, with additional training for the Middle East. I mean is there realy that much specialized desert training? We certainly send plenty of soldiers over there that aren't "desert troopers". So having him be Special Forces with the Middle East as his area of operations (like southeast Asia is Falcons), makes alot of sense.
