Ripcord should so be a Green Beret. Does Civil Air Patrol mean you can fly planes? So if ROC Ripcord is Special Forces do you use him as such? I haven't really included him in my verse yet. I was sort of waiting for the one that really looks like an airborne trooper, but I don't know what I'm going to call him. (Static Line is so hurting for an update.)
I'd say as a diversion tactic Airborne troops must have some worth. Sure D-Day and Operation Market Garden are the most glorious airborne insertions in history, but the use of Airborne troops in such a fashion seems highly risky. And unless you have already established air-superiority it would be suicide. And if you have air superiority, I doubt you will run into mass of troops that would require more than a company of men jumping out of an airplane. I mean just drop a cluster bomb. Once we have a foothold, the Airborne Infantry waits to make contact with the rest of the army and then work as a light infantry unit and work as any other light infantry unit. About RoC Ripcord: I do use him as SF, and he's going to be added to my custom ODA Team, along with RoC Duke who I've renamed Major Stryker. Classic Rip Cord (from the Attack on Cobra Island 7-pack) I have put into Tiger Force (where he was supposed to be back in the 80's). Marine_Deadpool is making me a custom Tiger Force (Classic) Rip Cord. He's not explicitly Special Forces, but I figure that putting him into a Sub-team like Tiger Force is pretty close ;)

Oh I know, I still see the merit for a Battalion or Brigade sized unit seizing an airfield. I mean what else can I do with my Sky Patrol Team.
So what name did you give ROC Ripcord? And What about Ripcord's Civil Air Patrol Days? I mean he could have been doing nothing more than cleaning out ashtrays, but I imagine as a member of the Joes he would have been the model cadet. And he would have excelled at everything the CAP has to offer. I'm just trying to make the case of Ripcord (Marvel) is also a pilot, like Barrel-Roll and ROC Ripcord. These sort of random Joe Pilots. Like how ZAP can fly helicopters in the Marvel Comics and I think Iceberg was flying in the comics too. But I might be mistaken about Iceberg. That could be from the Cartoons. I don't count them as pilots. Hey what about Duke in the Skyhawk? Last edited by Loose Cannon; 03-18-2010 at 02:45 AM.. |

I don't count them as pilots. Hey what about Duke in the Skyhawk? Yeah, you could use Marvel Rip Cord as a pilot if you want to. Civil Air Patrol does offer programs for its cadets to learn to fly. I read in Haney's book that some of the Delta Operators have their private pilots licence. They obviously can't fly jets, but some of them can pilot a small private plane (which comes in handy), and some can even fly a helicopter. I don't know, I guess I would see it more as an emergency thing. If they were stuck somewhere in some backwards country like Borovia or Sierra Gordo, and they needed to find a way out, Rip Cord could possibly fly a Sessna or something to get the team out of the country. As for the Skyhawk... what a crazy piece of equipment. I figure it just wasn't that hard to fly. What a ridiculous issue. Duke's first major assignment, and it ends with him loosing Cobra Commander. HA.

I think special ops teams are more likely to do HAHO jumps than HALO jumps. With a HAHO jump, you can exit the plane 40+ miles from your dropzone. The enemy on the ground doesn't hear your plane like in a HALO jump, where the plane's path passes relatively close the target DZ. Also depending how low they open, enemy on the ground can sometimes be alerted by the sound of the chutes opening on a quiet night.
HALO just sounds sexier.

For those of y'all on Facebook, did you know that Wade Collins in on Facebook? Yeah, the character from Snake-Eyes' LRRP team in 'Nam. He's on facebook. He's now my friend. The picture is a pretty good one from the Marvel run of his face and he's holding a gun. Pretty funny.

I don't understand the whole putting a fictional character up on Facebook. I haven't checked my Facebook page in over a month.

United States Combat Jumps Granted, there might be more that haven't been disclosed, but these are the jumps that participation in entitles the paratrooper to wear a bronze star/service star (signifying a "combat jump") with their parachutist badge. Anyway, my point throughout all this is that, judging from current usage and doctrine, the large-scale combat jump isn't as useful a tactical tool these days as it was during the Second World War, and that has to do with the evolution of the battlespace. Parachuting "behind enemy lines" offers little advantage when "enemy lines" since the Vietnam War have been fluid and virtually non-existent. Last edited by zuludelta; 03-18-2010 at 01:25 PM.. |

I suppose the need for future mass jumps would really depend on the scenario. Due to terrain type and enemy defense, it may be difficult to secure a landing strip for aircraft to deploy troops, so it might be necessary to have a lot of guys (more than just a pathfinder platoon) jump into an area, secure it, and set up LZs. It would be risky but less risky than trying to land a C-130 in an unsecure field.

Remember in Red Dawn how the Russian and Cuban forces parachuted into Colorado.
It looked impressive but....
