A 5th grade teacher's aide at my hometown (where I grew up and I have neices and nephews going) middle school called in a false bomb threat yesterday morning.
The going theory was that it was some kind of protest over recent budget cuts that were going to mean 3-4 teachers had to go.

I was ALL OVER IT as soon as I saw the thread! I'm SO excited.
In other news, I got to meet up with Marine_Deadpool; we had a really good visit and I gave him the next batch of figures to paint and add to the Custom ODA Team. It was great to talk with him. And I'm even more excited about getting the ODA Team finished by this Summer. Again, if y'all are considering commisioning a custom figure, I can't recommend Marine_Deadpool enough. He's a great guy and his work is top notch.

Slightly OT, but looking at the preview for Operation Hiss #2 (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...e-preview.html)
Looks like they're doing a HALO jump (at 40k', which seems rather high for a C-130 anyway), rather than static line, so I imagine they wouldn't be using round 'chutes. I know there are steerable round chutes (which is the only way I can justify SE's landing in Silent Interlude), but I thought the ramair ones were the preference? Anyone have any thoughts (or links to current US equipment)? |

AFAIK, ram-air airfoil chutes are still the standard for HALO jumps. Just chalk it up to artist error, I guess (but it's really the type of thing that most people don't know, so I don't know how much it qualifies as an error... it's the type of thing that would bug me, but I imagine most people would let something like that slide).

HALO jumps are always done with the rectangular chutes. 40,000 feet is almost ludicrous. And it's not like it really helps to jump from a higher altitude. As long as you've got cloud cover, that's pretty much the only thing to worry about. If it's a clear sky, it doesn't make much difference at all. You don't want the enemy to hear/see the aircraft and the jumpers, but at night, 25,000 ft versus 40,000 ft isn't going to make too much difference. To be honest, though. HALO jumps are so seldom used, especially into a combat zone. The Navy uses them for the SEALs sometimes, and it's almost a joke because they dump them into the ocean - 5 or 6 miles from shore. Launching from a boat would make much more sense, because they usually jump with a zodiac and use it once they've landed in the ocean. In Eric Haney's book, "Inside Delta Force", he says that Delta hardly ever uses HALO jumps. They're going to use jeeps or civilian vehicles to enter an area. It's low-profile, and safer. HALO is "Hollywood", and there really isn't too much use for it tactically.

Heh.
I've been thinking the past few weeks about GI Joe's context and original intent. I've come to the conclusion that artistic realism isn't part of what made GI Joe so popular back in the day, whether it was the toys, filecards, comics, or cartoons. Instead of artistic realism, I think it was an arbitrary realism to the extent that it made the property compelling. If we apply the filter of artistic realism to GI Joe as it was originally conceived, the fantasy just starts to fall apart, which is what we see happening anytime we talk in-depth in this thread about how GI Joe would function in the real world. We end up substituting our own ideas and research for Hasbro's, Hama's, and Rudat's own. |

Right. Its like a lot of such things. There's realism and there's "tv realism".
