What other Joes, that's not mention yet, wears a beret? All I can think of right now is Dialtone and Dusty (in some versions).

As for Dusty, it gets a bit confusing. First, there are two characters with that name (Tadur and Paquette), but the one we're all the most familiar with is Tadur. He's worn Khaki (but it was WAY before the Rangers switched to Khaki) and Maroon. I honestly don't know what to make of him. What's the general concensus on Dusty? I always figured he was an Airborne Infantryman... do we have any evidence that he's more than that? I've checked all his file cards, and he has extensive language training, but he's always listed as an Infantryman. My take on both of them is that they were very competent Infantrymen in their respective specialties and that they were recruited by the Joe Team for their respective expertise. There is no evidence that either of them is Ranger or Special Forces qualified. My guess is that they went through selection and training for the Joes and then got follow-on training (like Dusty's language skills). Was Dusty listed in the Action Force Battle files? Was Dial-Tone mentioned?

A while back, I think Zulu made the argument that Dusty was probably Special Forces. Is there any evidence for that other than his language training? Any opinions on Dusty as SF?

What language training?
I always figured the original was designed as a French Foreign Legionnaire. He has the look, and the French Assault rifle. Who would be considered the US' best Desert unit? I guess these days they all get some desert training. |

Yeah, I can't keep Air Force berets straight. I think some of their security forces wear Blue berets. I don't know what all they're doing, but it doesn't make any sense to me.
What's interesting about the Green Berets is that Army Special Forces adopted the green beret as headgear after several of their early units went through commando training with the Royal Marines during WWII. Oddly enough, the "green beret" is only used as an Army head gear in the U.S. In militaries around the world, the "green beret" is worn by Marine Commandos. In addition to the black beret worn by TACP/ALOs/AMLOs, colored berets in the Air Force are worn by Pararescue, Combat Controllers, Security Forces, and Combat Weather." •Black - Tactical Air Control Party (TACP), Air Liaison Officers (ALO), and Air Mobility Liaison Officers (AMLO) •Maroon - Pararescue (PJs) •Red (scarlet) - Combat Controllers •Royal Blue - Security Forces •Grey - Combat Weather |

I think his figure has worn 4 different berets: a tan/khaki beret (which was probably just colored to match his desert uniform), a maroon beret, a black beret for the Night Rhino Dusty, and a green beret for the paratrooper Dusty. None of them make any sense. I don't know if he was supposed to be a French Legionaire because he was born in Nevada and I'm not sure if you can join the Legionaires as an American citizen, but perhaps you could train with them through some exchange program. The one thing that is interesting is that he had a pre-enlistment application with GI Joe, sort of like like the Initial Accession program that exists for SFAS today. I'd say it's safe to conclude that Dusty had to undergo a variety of special training and courses before taking the Joes version of SFAS. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 03-11-2010 at 09:12 PM.. |
