It helps to think of the relationship between DoD pay grades and the GS payscale in terms of the old specialist ranks in the US Army.
Back in the second half of the 20th century (up until 1985 or so), the Army had several specialist ranks (of which only one survives to this day): Specialist 4 (E-4), Specialist 5 (E-5), Specialist 6 (E-6), and Specialist 7 (E-7). These ranks were the same pay grade as the NCO ranks of corporal (E-4), sergeant (E-5), staff sergeant (E-6), and master sergeant (E-7), respectively. But despite having equivalent pay, the specialists did not have the same authority as the NCOs. They were being paid primarily for their special technical skills, and not for their abilities as leaders. A Specialist 7, for example, was paid anywhere between 15% to 25% more than a corporal. However, the corporal "outranked" the Specialist 7. In joint DoD/DOJ/DHS operations (such as the ones currently taking place in Afghanistan and elsewhere), an unofficial hierarchy also exists along similar lines. Federal special agents attached to an Army company, for example, are expected to defer to some extent to the company's first sergeant when an operation is underway despite being paid much more than the senior NCO. You can structure your joint DoD/DHS units to take into account a similar disconnect between paygrade and authority. Quote:
How many DOHS guys do you need? I tend to create commanders on top of my regular Joe Forces. Of course if you're making those guys into DEA agents then yeah they'd be officer equivalents.
I use to try and split up everyone so I had equal number of Captains and Majors and Colonels. But what ends up happening is many of them are Pilots and so they all go together. But don't you have a separate DOHS force aside from your 5 commands? |

After reading DH's Joeverse, I'd say either Clean Sweep or Ozone could work as stand in's for your Botanist. I just discovered or remembered after I checked out his filecard that Clean Sweep is a Combat Engineer as well, so I might be able to give him another use. |

Yeah, if you're planning "creating" an all-new botanist type character (as opposed to using a pre-existing Joe), here are some more botany/ethnobotany-related code-names you can use (some will be better suited for female characters, others for male characters, and others will be gender non-specific):
Aster Dandelion (maybe Dandy Lion if the character is a particularly vain and foppish male? ) Foxglove Fly-Trap Ivy Mandrake Nettle Nightshade Sage Shaman Snap-Dragon Stoner () Sumac Thorn Wallflower Wormwood Also, if you're going for some degree of realism, keep in mind that the Army doesn't really have Laboratory Sciences officer career field positions specifically for botanists. Any botanists looking to apply their knowledge in the military would have to do so under one of four sub-MFAs: biochemistry, clinical laboratory sciences, microbiology and research psychology. Off the top of my head, I think a master's or PhD degree holder in the field of ethnobotany (as opposed to other fields of botany) would probably be best suited as a toxicologist in MFA 71E (Clinical Laboratory Sciences). You're welcome. BTW, in my original post I meant to say sergeant first class instead of master sergeant in reference to the E-7 NCO rank.

The Samuel Jackson Nick Fury figure supposedly uses some 25th parts, so they should be to scale with a tall 1/18th figure. ;)
