Gentleman, here's another unsatisfying answer from Larry, and to be honest I think this is his way of saying: Please don't ask anymore quesitons.
"I have no idea. Impossible to recreate where my head was when I wrote the original file cards. Everything about the Joes has been reimagined so many times, and I am in the midst of yet another reboot, so everything pre-dating this past January seems kind of moot to me." Happy to see the LHD idea get tossed back into the mix- I really think this makes more sense than a full sized aircraft carrier for what I consider a Joe sized unit. plus it has a deployment bay built into it for the WHALE and some Warthogs/ Night Rhinos. I dont think regular carriers do. someday i'd like to build one the way zoomie2001 has his carrier project. |

Damn Larry, lol....
Pretty much confirms what we all thought anyways. We all knew he didn't care about the property as much as the rest of us. He's definately a "here in the now" kind of guy. BUT... that's not that kind of answer that I figured he'd give if he was really going to be relaunching the ARAH continuity after #155 1/2. Right? The LHD boat really sounds pretty cool. That or the JHVS I'm at a toss up for what would be best for the Joes.

To be honest, Larry's stuff is a bit hit or miss for me these days. His original run was good, but towards the end... well, y'all know what happened towards the end. And recently, his newer stuff with the new continuity hasn't really captivated me. I will, of course, pick up the continuation of ARAH, but it's more out of a sense of nostalgia for my childhood rather than a sense of excitement for Larry's work. His Storm Shadow series was Aweful.

Origin started as a good book, but the 2nd arc by Larry was blah, Beachhead was blah, the Baroness was good. It's going to be a hit or miss series.

I didn't care for the art in Baroness, and they could have done a great deal more with that story. The whole "Beach-Head has Amnesia" is not my favorite. Would the Joes really recruit a guy with a severe phychiatric condition? I doubt it. Beach-Head's background is one of the things I've always really liked about the character: the Southern boy who grew up dirt poor... but instead of growing up to be no one a fade away like most folks expected, he fights and studies and works to make something of himself. Beach-Head was the Valadictorian of his class, and then goes on to join the Army and get through Ranger School and into the Joe Team. That's a heck of a success story. And I would think that those experiences and memories make him as tough as he is.

That' was my feeling as well. How's can he possilbly have put these characters completely out of his head when he's supposed to be picking up the series where he left off? Doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I think he just wants me to buzz off and quit asking questions.
He's said before that he often didn't know the end of an issue when he sat down to write it. I think we're probably expecting a lot more thought and insight than he put into things - and even if he did, expecting him to remember esoterica 25 years later (while in the midst of a relaunch and having written for at least three separate continuities) is probably asking a bit much of the guy. I think we've been putting way too much pressure on Larry with these questions. I can almost guarantee that Oliver, Zulu, Troynos and others have individually spent more time thinking about the details than Larry has.

Because he's not using those particular characters, or because that particular question asked him to remember what he had in mind for characters 25 years ago, or because he never put that much thought into it in the first place, or because... etc.

I think we've been putting way too much pressure on Larry with these questions. I can almost guarantee that Oliver, Zulu, Troynos and others have individually spent more time thinking about the details than Larry has. For me, great stories is built upon characters with depth. Good stories are driven by action, but epics are driven by strong characters. And as I get older, and because I've put in a lot of time thinking about how the Joeverse could work (and I do have a giant old notebook for my Joeverse), I realize that I've probably done a much better job than Larry at developing these characters. So have most of us on this thread. And Larry's Joeverse is going to pale in comparison to what I've worked out in my own mind. And that's OK. I'm indebted to Larry; his work is how I fell in love with Joe to begin with... but maybe I've just outgrown him. On a side note, I had a conversation with Marine Deadpool tonight. He's a great guy, and we've become good friends. We talked about the Custom Project and it's coming along really well. I really think the Low-Light we've come up with is going to be fantastic. Anyway, I'm going to take a page from Zulu's playbook. When I finally get finished with my Custom Joe Team, I'm going to start typing up a file for each of them. Not a file card, but I'm going to buy a stack of Manilla folders and type a couple of pages on each of them. I'll certainly incorporate a lot of the Hama/Hasbro Info, but I'll fix the mistakes and add what I need to. I may need Zulu's help for some of it. But after Larry's answer, I was a little irratated. But I shouldn't be. You're right Fogger; it's not Larry's fault. If I want it done right (and I mean "the way I want it"), I'm just going to have to do it myself.

Yeah, we always tend to forget that Joe was work-for-hire for Larry.
Not really forget, but we tend to think he has to be as indepth as we are cause he spent 155 (and counting) issues with these characters and helped define them.

Ever watch "Burn Notice"? It's probably my favorite show right now; it comes on USA on Thursday night. Anway, Michael Weston is the main character. He's an ex-Spy who started his career by leaving home and joining the Army... then they get really hazy about what he did in the Army and which branch of the government he really worked for as a spy. That's kind of how I see Chuckles. And the name Provost for a C.I.D. Agent is laughable. In fact, in makes me "chuckle". Sorry, I couldn't resist. But wouldn't Chuckles almost need a fake file name. I mean, the Joes real names got found out by Cobra pretty often. So if Chuckles info is kept at the same level of security as the other Joes, and Cobra can get into their files pretty easily... wouldn't that mean a death sentence for a deep cover operative whose trying to infiltrate Cobra? I mean, the code name "Chuckles" is ridiculous. But Cobra steals his file and looks up his real name: "Provost". The Joke's on them... now the code name makes sense because he's the one laughing at Cobra. On the other hand, Zulu, great catch on Hot Seat. That's a really interesting way to look at it. They could be cousins.
