Didn't that issue with Flint/LJ, Jingles & Day and Destro (where Bludd was impersonating him) kind of hint at some kind of shared past between Flint and Destro, or LJ and Destro?

Another alternative rationalisation, although this would age Flint a bit, I think, would be for him to have come up with Duke as an SF NCO. But while Duke goes on to make top kick, Flint doesn't re-enlist after his service term expires. After a year or three bored out of his skull out of the service, he decides he wants to become a pilot and re-enters the Army through Flight Warrant Officer Training. Outside of inserting time spent as a civilian between his stint as an SF NCO and being a pilot, I think it allows for the career progression in the 1985 filecard (enlisted infantry/Ranger --> enlisted Special Forces --> warrant officer aviator) without having to allow for weird branch crossover decisions (i.e., going directly from SF NCO to aviation warrant officer).

What's the advantage? Do y'all want Flint to be older and a 'Nam vet? I figured he wasn't and that Duke recruited him specifically because he was younger. Every unit needs young blood, why not young blood that you can trust and you've worked with?

It would probably be easier to make it all fit together if Flint was trained as a civilian private rotary wing pilot instead, that way it doesn't introduce any conflict with how army warrant officer career progression really goes (it throws out the pilot MOS... but hey, at least he's still a licensed pilot, he's just not authorised to fly for the Army).

That's interesting; I had no idea about that. What happened? Memphis and Cincinati have sort of devolped as the hubs of the Midwest... Witchita is much more central geographically. That's really intereting... I wonder if this played any roll in Flint's pilot qualification.

1. I want to use Flint for my Nam-verse story project. 2. I need to fulfill my obsessive-compulsive need to rationalize the early Hama-written file cards. |

Oh, I also just sent Larry Hama and email asking him about Flint and Falcon's education. So if he writes back, I'll let y'all know what he says.

I know I said Flint might have gone to Wichita High School North, because of a possible grandparent or great grandparent that had an Indian heritage, hense the Code name: Flint. But a more plausable High School that a friend and I speculate he might have gone to is, Chaplain Kapaun Memorial High School in east Wichita. It was operated in part by the Jesuits as a preparatory school for young men from mid 50's to 1971. They had a "floating floor" underneath the basketball court. Where there was a rifle range, where students - under supervision - practiced marksmanship with school-supplied .22 cal rifles, and supported a school rifle team. That would give Flint his early weapons training. So even if Flint graduated High School in 1971, He still had 4-6 years of University schooling, Then 7 to 9 years of Military service. Before joining the Joe team. The school was named after an Army chaplain Fr. Emil J. Kapaun, he served during the Korean War and was captured and died while captured. So I can see that as Flint's determination in schooling and also his introduction to the Army. Recently, Fr. Kapaun had about a week of articles in the local paper because he is being considered for Sainthood. The present name of the school is Kapaun Mt Carmel High School, its moniker is the Crusaders and it is still a Catholic (private) School. The School is now co-ed after merging with Mt. Carmel Academy, a girls boarding school. Also, the school is no longer at the same location after merging it obtained the Mt Carmel campus. Flint's, High School education in my joe-verse, what do you guys think?

I love this thread, but every so often I think of that SNL skit where Shatner's at the Star Trek convention and a fan asks him about his locker combination in a particular episode.
http://s263.photobucket.com/albums/i...r-GetALife.flv Shipwreck's a SEAL now. He may look like a lazy bum, but he's proven himself to be the opposite. I don't think Clutch has shown that type a growth. I like maybe Flint moved to aviation during manpower reduction during the 70's. The problem with characters with multiple filecards, is that too often the filecards are rewritten to justify the new uniform instead keeping within the preestablished framework.

Yeah, Flint's time at Oxford is a mystery. And although I realize that the two continuities don't work together (at face value), I like to think that Action Force Flint (David Fairborne) is a cousin for Dash Fairborne. Maybe David was able to influence his American Cousin while Dash was at Oxford. I like the idea of Destro and the Baroness being at/around Oxford. The Lady Jaye/Trinity connection is also an interesting possible link.

Well, there's no harm in using him in your Joeverse. But on the second one, take it easy... you'll go crazy or blind or both. ;)
Oh, I also just sent Larry Hama and email asking him about Flint and Falcon's education. So if he writes back, I'll let y'all know what he says. I honestly thought the reason Flint was a Warrant Officer at all was so he could fly helicopters. Of course they messed up the first filecard. The Special Forces Warrant Officer program was in its infancy in 86 or 85 when Flint was developed. However the Flight Warrant Officer school had been around and we already got Wild-Bill. I think they were just copying the other famous fictional Green Beret at that time. John RAMBO Rambo II came out in 1985, in which he flys a helicopter. Why or how an enlisted man is trained to fly I have no idea. But he can. And although Duke is the Joes first Green Beret, Rambo has to be the most famous fictional Green Beret of all. I think Hasbro/Larry were just trying to capitalize on that popularity. I think Flint's personality is nothing like Rambo, nor was it meant to be, he was meant to be a leader. |
