I just noticed something with all this talk about Flint. He's basically Wild Bill v2: a spec ops-capable ground-pounder who eventually decides he wants to become a helicopter pilot.
Makes me wonder if Hama viewed Flint primarily as a pilot, at least initially in the writing process. It's the same reason Falcon get's introduced in the next round of characters: he was supposed to be the SF leader character for the '87/'88 group of Joes.

So then Flint applies for the Warrant Officer Flight Program. It's a tough course, and very challenging. But he finds that he really prefers being on the ground, and so, as a Warrant Officer, he applies for SF selection. He passes and is accepted as into the 18A Program. From there he goes on to HALO, etc.
Another alternative rationalisation, although this would age Flint a bit, I think, would be for him to have come up with Duke as an SF NCO. But while Duke goes on to make top kick, Flint doesn't re-enlist after his service term expires. After a year or three bored out of his skull out of the service, he decides he wants to become a pilot and re-enters the Army through Flight Warrant Officer Training. Outside of inserting time spent as a civilian between his stint as an SF NCO and being a pilot, I think it allows for the career progression in the 1985 filecard (enlisted infantry/Ranger --> enlisted Special Forces --> warrant officer aviator) without having to allow for weird branch crossover decisions (i.e., going directly from SF NCO to aviation warrant officer). At the start of America's Elite, Flint was their helicopter pilot.

Yeah, but they also thought Shipwreck could date Covergirl... so I don't look at that as a very good authority. ;)

That's actually how I'm rationalising his background in my Filecard Project. It's the only way to make sense of the core elements of the character (the rank, his piloting, and the whole SF thing) as introduced in the 1985 filecard. It would be a lot simpler to just jettison the helicopter pilot part of his history if one were thinking of "streamlining" the mythos, but I don't know if that takes away from Flint's character. It would probably be easier to make it all fit together if Flint was trained as a civilian private rotary wing pilot instead, that way it doesn't introduce any conflict with how army warrant officer career progression really goes.

Yeah, as a Colonel who has been put in charge of America's elite Counter-Terrorism unit, there's just no way that Hawk could have stayed in Europe and not done a few tours in 'Nam. Heck, there's no way that a Combat Arms Officer would have made Colonel without a Combat patch from 'Nam and a Ranger Tab. That was how the Army worked in the 80's.

C'mon, the scruffy, lazy, Sailor gets to date the former Model? Shipwreck's almost as bad as Clutch. There were just a lot more eligible batchlors on the team. I think a good story line could have been if they set AE a few years later, and Flint is able to find love again by dating Covergirl. That would have at least made more sense.
Shipwreck looked like a Homeless guy in that series. It was aweful.

I've always looked at Duke as a "ground pounder" leader, while Flint is leading in the air with the smaller vehicles like the Sky Hawk or Dragonfly.
But I'm not familiar with their background details like the rest of you in this thread. |
