I think using Flint as a SF WO is a great idea, but according to the file card he went to Flight WO School after SF school so his training as a WO was geared toward flying not toward being an XO for SF, even though he is SF qualified. I also think it's possible that he was in Nam considering the following statement: Flint "personally led a half dozen rescue missions in hostile terriorties that for obvious reasons were never publicized let alone admitted to." So he's obviously been in combat and he's obvisously led covert/clandestine operations (perhaps in Laos or Cambodia) and he's had tons of training. Sounds like the perfect SOG One-Zero to me. Maybe after college he went to fight the war in Vietnam because he felt it was important and he wasn't feeling challenged in academia, which may explain why he didn't become an officer. Maybe he wanted to experience something outside of his class and level of education. To fight alongside the common GI. To be a real Joe.

Don't all Rhodes Scholars do their postgrad work at one of the residential colleges in the University of Oxford? Or are you talking about Flint's undergrad education?
I suppose he could have received his undergrad degree from a Kansas institution, and not necessarily Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, Columbia, Harvard, or any of the other Ivy League places. Non-Ivy League schools have produced quite a number of American Rhodes Scholars: two from Davidson College in North Carolina, one from Denison University in Ohio, three from Duke, one who was jointly enrolled in Georgetown and U of Alabama, one from the University of Georgia, one from the College of the Holy Cross, a couple from UIUC, two from MIT, a bunch from Stanford, and lots of others I'm too lazy to recount/research. Speaking of Joes' education... anyone else disagree with DDP's revelation that Duke was educated at Yale? For some reason, Duke never struck me as an Ivy League guy. Yeah, I know all Rhodes Scholarships go to Oxford. That's not the question. I was referring to the fact that his Undergraduate alma mater is never mentioned. I don't know that any Kansas Institution has ever produced a Rhodes Scholar, but there are several State Universities have. The University of Mississippi has produced about 25. West Point has about 40. Georgia has had some. Tennesse has had 6. Duke is actually ranked 4th in producing Rhodes scholars for the past 10 years. They have produced as many as 3 in a year. Flint's arrogance speaks of a private education. If not Ivy League, probably Ivy Caliber like Stanford or Duke. He seems like a guy who would have wanted to get away from Kansas.

Doesn't the name Dashiell just scream "old money"? I agree Tyroc, I always got the impression he came from a life of class and privilege and wanted more.

A soldier can move from Aviation to SF, but not from SF to Aviation. Just like his original rank of E-6, Hama just didn't do his research and understand how this process worked. What's possible is that he went into the Army under a Flight Contract and was sent to Flight Warrant Officer's School upon successful completion of his basic training. Given his level of education and fitness, a slot like that is not unheard of. He then went through Flight Warrant Officer School, and then applied for SF. So he could have been a Junior Warrant Officer when he went through selection.

Can't remember the issue, but I think it was referenced in Pablo Hidalgo's book (which is where I first read about Duke attending Yale). The MASS Device connection doesn't surprise me... wasn't the DDP GI Joe Universe (back when it was still being published under the Image Comics banner) originally intended to incorporate elements of the Sunbow cartoon (sans Cobra-La) and the Marvel comic universe?

Yeah, Blaylock made a big deal about wanting to get the Sunbow stuff into. Which is why Shipwreck had such a big role in DDP's opening arc where in the comic he didn't show up that often (aside from his first appearance when Cobra Island was formed, did he ever show up again before DDP?)
