Yeah there's only 1000? CW-5 in the Army. I think you need a minimum of 20 years in the service to even be considered. Same as E-9's and 0-9s.
But the Joes just didn't have traditional Officers early on. Flint and Torpedo was it. Torpedo was never given a leadership role. Claymore is the first Joe Infantry Officer, but he sort of doesn't count. Then we got Falcon, and Psyche-Out. Both were immediately put in charge a teams with the invasion of Cobra Island. When they both get reissues as part of Sonic Fighters, Pysche-Out makes Captain, Falcon does not. But Falcon as a Cartoon character was a baffoon. Then we got Super-Trooper. GIJoe wouldn't see any officers until 1990 with Grid-Iron and Rapid-Fire. Major Storm came out that year, but another big ticket Item people missed and he's not really an infantry officer. Sub-Zero gets forgotten as well. But these guys should be representing the Joe Leadership. Does anyone consider Charbroil a Warrant Officer based on his V2 filecard? (Anti-venom task force?) |

I don't think your suggestion that Falcon started out as an enlisted man directly conflicts with anything that's been published.
Still, maybe because of how youthful (relatively speaking) his character has been portrayed in the comics and in the cartoons, I've always thought of him as either an ROTC or high school-to-West Point grad rather than a former enlisted man who went through OCS. I suppose he could also be one of the few active-duty enlisted men who qualify for a West Point slot, but you'd expect something like that to be mentioned in his filecard (á la Super Trooper). |

Flint's education is the same way. His Rhodes Scholarship is mentioned in every filecard that I can think of... and yet, where he actually went to school is never mentioned. I'm actually thinking about asking Hama about these questions.

Cause Falcon and Flint are meant to be total bad asses.
Its a rule that bad asses have to have a mysterious past. I don't know. I think Flint was meant to be the Joe's version of a Delta Operator maybe. Baddest of the bad. He's outside of the normal command structure, which gives him some freedoms in interpreting orders. Or something like that anyways.

I suppose he could have received his undergrad degree from a Kansas institution, and not necessarily Princeton, Dartmouth, Yale, Columbia, Harvard, or any of the other Ivy League places. Non-Ivy League schools have produced quite a number of American Rhodes Scholars: two from Davidson College in North Carolina, one from Denison University in Ohio, three from Duke, one who was jointly enrolled in Georgetown and U of Alabama, one from the University of Georgia, one from the College of the Holy Cross, a couple from UIUC, two from MIT, a bunch from Stanford, and lots of others I'm too lazy to recount/research. Speaking of Joes' education... anyone else disagree with DDP's revelation that Duke was educated at Yale? For some reason, Duke never struck me as an Ivy League guy. |

Duke and UCLA Berkeley I could understand, but Yale not so much. In the DDP run, his parents were hippy types who were disapproving of his joining the army, I don't see them being happy about him joining any 'establishment' colleges..

Wait, during AE, doesn't his dad get mad at Duke because he decides to enlist and not attend art college like his father wanted? Wouldn't that mean he didn't go to college?
