I was told this story:
An SF Team XL from 7th group was briefing a General in Panama. Prior to the meeting, he switched rank with his Team Leader so he wore Captain's bars for the briefing. He needed them to listen, and he new they would listen to a Captain. After the briefing, he went back outside, put on his correct ranks, and got back to work. |

Never really asked. I think he changed his mind while in school. I know my brother thought twice about being an officer when he was in college ROTC.
He (my friend) majored in engineering and lives close to the school. I think his brothers went to. Maybe a family thing? They do have a good engineering program. It's got an excellent Engineering program, as well as a very good business/management school and because it's campus joins the campus of Washington & Lee University (and the students and both schools and cross list courses at the other school), they have access to a very fine liberal arts education as well. West Point has a great reputation, and it's an amazing school. And the standards to get in are very tough: they start with the cream of the crop. VMI's entrance requirements are not quite as strenuous, but it's still a very rigorous education, and it's smaller size means more personal attention. I've been to visit the Citadel too (It's basically Sout Carolina's version of VMI), but I'd say VMI is academically much tougher.

Yeah, the General and the Major were both from 7th group. The General told that story and the Major just laughed and blushed a little. Later we found out that the Major had been the Captain (Team Leader) that had loaned out his captain's bars to his XO. The General had been their Colonel at the time.
They had not planned on telling the Colonel what they had done, but word got around. The Colonel called them into his office and they thought they were going to get chewed out for decieving a high ranking officer of an allied country. The colonel just lauged and said to the Warrant Officer, "Chief, if it'll do you any good, you can trade with me next time." We all laughed pretty hard. You always laugh when a general tells a joke, but that time we weren't just being polite.

That is funny.
Rank is pretty important, even in this country. How many times have you said to someone in customer service "Can I speak to your manager?"

How do you differentiate Alpinista and Hit & Run? Are you using a different figure? I sort of view most if not all the Argentina/Brazil Joes are actually Americans.
I use to have that same view of BH and Leatherneck and then there was the one comic where Stalker gets injured and Snake-Eyes tell the team to go on and he'll stay behind and cover them. Stalker is saying no, but Leatherneck says well Snake-Eyes is the 2nd in command so he's now giving the orders. Then he takes the scope and the M203 and builds a better weapon to go kick some ass, only to get caught. I was very confused, then like two years later we get both and Deep-Six and Rock'n'Roll as E-7s As far as Matt Trakker, well they gave him a figure, and a helicopter thingy. Plus I'd hate to see Flint in a chopper and not on the ground. To me he's R&D for the Joes with Gears and GI Jane and Hi-Tech. Yeah, I hate using Flint as a helo pilot as well so Tracker could fill in there. Alpinista's figure is just slightly different but because I love Hit N Run so much it's nice to have two similar-looking soldiers on the Joe team. The truth is I Americanized him and gave him the Code Name Fastrope but since Fastrope is someone no one would know, I just listed him as Alpinista. I was thinking of using Barrel Roll as Delta Sniper who was crosstrained as a Little Bird pilot because there are some theories that Delta Operators would be good candidates for limited flying duties where they could fight on the ground and in the air. I'll have to find the source for this. But BR could have gotten recruited for having a civilian helicopter license, making him a versatile candidate along with his sniper training.

Yeah, this is something I know a bit about. I actually had an extensive briefing on this once by a retired SF General and an SF Major.
Lieutenant have never worked very well in SF. In Vietnam, Butter Bar Green Berets made a lot of mistakes and got a lot of guys killed. Since the early 80's, the earliest an officer can apply for SF is as a First LT who is already on the Promotion list for Captain, and those are very rare. As a general rule, only Captains apply for SF. |

IIRC, Dick Marcinko had said that one of his guys had received pilot training so they could "borrow" transportation when needed. Makes sense if you think about it. Much easier than having to call for extraction.

My first week at Bragg, I decided that I should go over to thier building and introduce myself. I was their Chaplain, after all. I knocked and was told to enter. As soon as they realized I was a stranger, three large SF NCO's politely escorted me back to the parking lot. They thanked me for coming, and said, "Sir, we know where your office is. Thanks for stopping by. We'll see you around." It didn't take a rocket scientist to see what was going on. I got back to the Chaplain's office, where my buddy another Chaplain was waiting for me. "How'd it go down there?" he asked. I didn't even bat an eye, "I think I just found G.I. Joe Headquarters... seriously". I felt like a Chaplain who had stumbled into the Motorpool at Wadsworth. We both had a good laugh over that one.

Did he just send one of his guys to civilian pilot training? Delta Force has guys like that, but they aren't military pilots who are rated on F-14's or anything like that.
