I think i would pick Tollbooth over Backstop though. Again, fairly easy custom- i would replace his Village People vest with a Sgt Stone vest , which has always reminded me of a Sapper's vest for some reason. |

There are a number of highly educated Joes working relatively low-level jobs and/or sporting curiously low ranks, though. As mentioned before (by Lifeline71, I think), Doc's official filecard job of "medic" is too weird. A commissioned MD working as a full-time medic? And Dr. Link Talbot is listed as being an E-4. WTF? And Barrel Roll, who sports a pilot MOS, is listed as an E-5 and is primarily used as a sniper, IIRC. All the services require pilots to be officers (commissioned or warrant, depending on the service), and using a pilot as a sniper (no matter how good of a shot he is) seems to be an exorbitant waste of training dollars. Yeah, Hasbro really screwed up with Barrelroll's "jobs".
I think making him a sniper makes the most sense (since that's what his figures primarily are, even the glider ones). As for his piloting skills, I figure can always say he got his civilian liscense (he does get a job flying airplanes between the end of DDP's run and when he makes the appearance in World War 3).

Yeah, that's how I rationalize it, too. A licensed private/commercial pilot looking to join the military would probably be pushed by a recruiter to go into aviation as an officer/warrant officer, but he can't be forced into joining the officer corps if he doesn't want to. It certainly makes more sense than the alternative, which is that Barrel Roll earned his pilot rating in the military, but for some reason ended up being used as a sniper (and an enlisted one at that).

Yeah I really don't know what motivates a guy to be an officer over enlisted. Barrel-Roll is a perfect example. I take V1 Barrel-Roll as a pilot. (renamed Afterburner) DTC Barrel-Roll just screams Delta Force Sniper like Randy Shughart in Blackhawk Down. He's my "Shooter." I use 5pack Resolute Duke as Lt Barrel-Roll(Colored brown). He's another pilot.
Still Flint is another one. Have Warrant Officers always been such an integral part of Special Forces ODA teams? I mean when did that start? How Larry or Rudat come up with that? I'm sure many of us were like "WTF" is a Warrant Officer? Only to look it up and E-6 is not WO-2? But like Flint and most Warrant Officers, they were enlisted before, and at least E-6s before going to Warrant Officer School. How does that come about? Is there a slot available and the Colonel says. "You know what Fairborne I want you for Warrant Officer school." MOS 180A are coming from within the ranks of the Special Forces. So I wonder if that wouldn't happen more often with the older Joes like Grunt. |

http://www.usawoa.org/woheritage/Hist_SF_WO.pdf The short summary is basically this: Special Forces needed detachment XOs, but finding lieutenants that had the necessary experience to serve as SF executive officers was hard. Most infantry lieutenants were too young and inexperienced to serve meaningfully in the SF XO role. Special Operations Command initially floated the idea of creating a limited-duty officer program (similar to what the Navy and the Marines have) exclusively for senior SF NCOs, but eventually settled on working in these NCOs within existing warrant officer structure. |

Yeah, I think Barrel Roll is a bit more confusing than Doc. With Doc, I felt that in the early days of the team he pulled double duty as both doctor and field medic when needed. I view BR as a sniper who specializes in high altitude missions, and uses gliders and parachutes to deliver him to his "job". He may be a qualified civilian pilot, but that isn't his primary function on the team. It does make him more versatile, however.

I got him on a High Altitude Sniper & Observation unit with BarrelRoll as the sniper, Grand Slame the Forward Observer/Spotter and Starduster as security.
