I know Lobdell/Charest (who is an amazing artist BTW) worked on Wildcats/XMen but I thought it was Charest and James Robinson on Wildcats. Wasn't it Lobdell/Broome?

Conversely, there are artists who aren't known for working off of photo reference but still end up with poorly composed panels and ambiguous character silhouettes and gestures. Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane--as much as I liked their work as a kid growing up--are the prime examples of the popular 1980s/1990s artist whose florid illustration style is accompanied by a relatively underdeveloped sense of visual storytelling. Outside of the US, I'd say Albert Uderzo, Masamune Shirow, Hiroaki Samura, and Rumiko Takahashi are my favourite writer/artists. While I think the writer-as-an-artist/artist-as-a-writer is on the wane in North American comics, I think every aspiring or amateur comic book writer should at least learn how to draw even just simple human figures and basic props. It helps them think in "visual terms" so they can better relate their ideas to the artists they're working with... comics, first and foremost, is a visual medium, so the illustrations have to be able to convey the rudiments of a story even without dialogue. Quote:
Rod Whigham also mentioned to me the extremely short time that the entire creative team often had to turn in issues for the GI Joe comic due to editorial restrictions (both Marvel's and Hasbro's) and the often-changing artist roster, as few artists wanted to work on the title.

I can't really name any right now. If there are any, they're still in the independents or possibly Image, Boom, Dynamite, Oni or one of those publishers.
I know Lobdell/Charest (who is an amazing artist BTW) worked on Wildcats/XMen but I thought it was Charest and James Robinson on Wildcats. Wasn't it Lobdell/Broome? Scott Lobdell did the first two issues of Wildcats/X-men (Golden & Silver Age) with Charest and Jim Lee respectively, James Robinson did the third (modern) with Adam Hughes on pencils, and Warren Ellis wrote the fourth (Dark Age) with Mat Broome.

As far as artist/writer combos I've always liked Mike Grell and Stan Sakai. Dan Jurgens had an awesome run on JLA and Superman back in the day but his Breach sucked. Tony Daniel was good when he was doing F5 and Adrenalyne but his recent Batman was kinda eh in terms of story telling.
There are alot of very good indie guys out there, Jason Lutes of Berlin is phenomenal. |

Used to love Daniel.
Grell is great. Isn't Jurgens writing/drawing Booster Gold? When I write, I try to make sure my movements and motions have some semblance of real world happening (wow, weird sentence structure). What I mean is I don't fully act out the movements but I do mentally, so if have a guy facing to the front and rolls, I try to make sure the motions they go thru make sense and work. If was drawn out, I try to make sure there's no jerky motions. Even if the artist skips some of the motions, it should be obvious going from Step 1 to Step 5 makes sense and nothing unnatural happens.

Hey Guys,
Rampage has come up a lot in our conversations recently about vehicle drivers. So I looked him up. I own him, but I've never really paid too much attention. Based on real names (Sherman R. Guderianthe), the original Rampage (v1) was really Heavy Metal with a new code name. The second Rampage is the one we often mention: Walter McDaniel. We know he served with Beach-head in the Ranger Regiment - and the goofy explanation for why they reused his mold ("They even dress alike"). Looking at his file card, however, he's a great character: Infantry & Counter-Intelligence. Oddly, it seems that the RoC Rampage that comes with the RHINO is the McDaniel character. So even though he looks like V1 Rampage, his file name is V2 Rampage. And so just like ROC Ripcord and Repeater, they've changed another character's race and paygrade: V2 was an E-6, and ROC Rampage is an E-4. Has anyone else noticed this? Are y'all using the RHINO driver as the same character as V2 or not?

I just ordered mine. So I haven't viewed the filecard yet. But I bought him to be Heavy Metal. When I think I Rampage he will always be Beachhead's Ranger buddy.
In fact BH, Rampage, Sabertooth, and Wreckage are the team Beach likes to role with. Team Balacava Last edited by Loose Cannon; 02-19-2010 at 02:44 AM.. |
