Poor Dee Jay.
He had the lamest "time" of any one and done Joe (one appearance only). Mangler died in his only appearance, but at least he went out like a hero. Dee Jay? He appears, says two words, gets bombed to hell. Two things about the death of BF2000... 1 - what was Maverick doing flying the Vector so low and thru an oil storage area? Wouldn't the heat given off by the engines be enough to ignite the area anyways? But damn that is some awesome flying, taking that huge jet so low and between drums. 2 - the only one to survive massive explosions of oil drums is the one guy that is not in an armored vehicle? |

That's not necessarily Hama's fault - you can attribute at least some of that to the artist as well.

^^^= Truth!
Recoil is one of my favorites, but certainly because of the character and not the costume. I continue to tweak my Joe organization with all the good ideas that get posted in this thread. I'm not sure how to fit them in yet but I really like having the drivers as Cavalry Scouts. There are a about a dozen drivers that i would like to see in my modern era line up- Rollbar- i'm using the one from the cycle 2 pack for one of my HALO guys, mine would be based on his V1/ V2 look Rumbler- V1 Clutch/ Double Clutch- combo of 2003 & 2007 Steeler- V3 Thunder/ Thunderwing/ Thunderblast- Crankcase- V1 Heavy Metal- V1 Major Storm- V1 Switch Gears- V2 i know thats not quite 12. Any suggestions? edit- add V2 Long Range which is a totally different person from V1. Quote:
Inspired by Zulu's work with updating the Joe drivers to Cavalry Scouts, I went ahead and swapped around some parts for some of the most ridiculously colored Vehicle drivers.
See if you can guess who is who: On the left is Cross-Country, I'm not so happy with him. Hardtop cost me a pretty penny so I'm Ok with the Tigerstripe Orange. Giving the orders on the right? You just mean the ones who didn't look silly? I suppose Blocker is alright. And Rampage V2, but he is less a driver and more a Ranger. |

So we always organize general units and such but what about organization for a specific mission. Let's say the Joes were going to perform Light Infantry/Ranger type mission similar to the Battle of Mogadishu. Your assests consist of four Blackhawks configured with fast rope rigging and two gunners, leaving ten available seats per helicopter for troops. A platoon of forty men.
Who do you send, what type of teams (Fireteam, MG, Recoiless Rifle, Mortar, Sniper) do you organize, and who's doing what? Granted, forty Joes is a lot so if you want to use some greenshirts to fill generic riflemen positions feel free. Last edited by Tanksmasher; 02-18-2010 at 01:39 PM.. |

Yeah, it may be that Hama's descriptions were exaggerated by the artist. Speaking of which, what format does Hama use when writing the Joe comics? Does he simply write the dialogue and give the artist free range as to how the panels are created and how the characters are moving or does he provide a very detailed description of the action taking place (e.g. Duke stands in the foreground while a helicopter descends in the distance, etc)?

1 squad per chopper? Maybe combine a base camp mortar team, with snipers and your Tac party into one team, and three assault teams. Two in that big city urban environment wouldn't be enough.
Probably no Mortar team at all unless say assualting a hamlet in Afghanistan? |

I've never seen any of his scripts, or heard him describe his writing process, so I don't know for sure. As for Tank's question, I'll have to give it some thought.

AS this was something I loved doing as a kid I would give it no thought other than pick my 40 favorite. (After I saw "PLATOON" it was always 40 or 42) So usually 4 officers and 4 Senior NCOs. A radio guy for every team or at least a guy who has a radio.

The "Marvel method" used to be real popular back in the day, but I think it's fallen out of favour now, which is why you get a lot of static-looking and stiff comic book art these days--artists are losing their sense of dynamism and spontaneity because they're so busy sticking to the scripts. Artists in the 1960s and 1970s had a lot more creative control over the narrative because they were actively involved in the storytelling process. Of course, not every artist has the storytelling skills of old school Marvel method greats like Jack Kirby or Gil Kane, and I think that's one of the reasons why the "Marvel method" has fallen into disuse. A lot of the most popular artists these days (and going as far back as the mid-1980s) are more concerned with illustrating as opposed to storytelling. A talent for rendering is great and it's a prerequisite for being a good artist in most any field, but without a refined ability to tell a story through gesture and staging, a comic book artist might as well be illustrating posters, so I can understand why these days, the bulk of the storytelling responsibility is now the writer's.
