Inspired by Zulu's work with updating the Joe drivers to Cavalry Scouts, I went ahead and swapped around some parts for some of the most ridiculously colored Vehicle drivers.
See if you can guess who is who: On the left is Cross-Country, I'm not so happy with him. Hardtop cost me a pretty penny so I'm Ok with the Tigerstripe Orange. Giving the orders on the right? |

Interesting that it was in 87 because that's around the time I started to loose interest. No sure if it was the joes or the girls in junior high school though.

Claymore's crew of mostly headswap customs has captured Skullbuster and his team of Range-Vipers trying to steal ancient relics.

I definitely agree with Hama and Rudat being the godfathers of ARAH. I think Rudat may not get as much credit because he was more focused on the visual side of things, but one should never underestimate how his toy designs consciously or subconsciously affected the way Hama wrote the backgrounds for the characters. For example, Hama crafted an interesting backstory for Destro, but you have to figure at least some of it was motivated by the need to rationalize Rudat's design decision giving Destro a metal mask.
And you could really tell when Rudat stepped down as the lead toy designer for ARAH. IMHO, after he stepped down in 1987, that's when the toy designs really started to go south, eventually culminating in plastic abominations like the Lunartix Empire figures. As for the cartoon, they had many writers, so I guess the closest thing to a singular creative voice in the Sunbow cartoons was story editor Flint Dille (who worked on 55 of the 95 episodes). I don't know if he had as much creative impact on the GI Joe property as Hama and Rudat, though. |

I agree, though. My interest in the ARAH toys really only lasted a few years... I came into the toys pretty late (I was still buying the 1985 figures by the time the 1987 figures came out). By the time 1989 rolled around, I was at that awkward no-longer-a-snot-nosed-kid-but-not-yet-a-teen age where I wanted to look "cool" to the opposite sex and toys were quickly becoming "uncool" (although I kept buying Joes up until 1991 or so, allegedly for my little brother ) Last edited by zuludelta; 02-17-2010 at 06:19 PM.. |

Oh, and Troynos, Outback came out in 1987, so he's definitely a Rudat-designed figure. |
