I doubt if the combat diver SF teams actually use SCUBA. They probably use CCUBA gear like the SEALs and the USMC's Recon combatant divers.
Don't know anything about SF combat swimming/diving ops, but I figure it's probably more similar to what the Marine Recon combatant divers do, as opposed to what SEALs are trained to do. Looking at the training pipeline at the official US Army Enlisted Master Template, it looks like SF divers take the SF Combat Diver Qualification Course, which is by and large, the same course Marine Recon combatant divers take. SEALs are more than just trained up to the level of SF Combat Dive-qualification, they're fully trained across the full spectrum of underwater demolitions and sabotage. Yeah, the SEALs probably can do more stuff underwater... it's when they get on the land that they have lots of operational problems. As long as their at sea, SEALs do great. So it's no surprize that they can do more. However, if there's a mission that has anything to do with operations on the Land, I'd call SF or MARSOC or the Boy Scouts of America, for that matter.

Hard to tell but ya, there's a spot on the bottom. I'll try to take a better pic.

That sounds like an excellent set-up, Topside. Using the SF Mike Force as a Blueprint is a great idea. Most people don't think about Army Special Forces as doing a lot of SCUBA ops, but they have whole A-Teams dedicated to that kind of work. To be honest, I've never worked with any SCUBA SF guys, but I'd be very interested to talk with some. I wonder how their work differs from what the SEALs or MARSOC is doing?
2–19. Qualification requirements a. Combat diver. Individuals assigned to positions requiring the performance of waterborne missions using compressed
gases must qualify for the combat diver rating. A combat diver must be able to— (1) Inspect and maintain basic diving equipment to include open and closed-circuit self-contained underwater breathing apparatus (scuba). (2) Conduct open-circuit dives up to 130 FSW. (3) Dive while using closed-circuit equipment within operational limits. (4) Take appropriate action in underwater emergencies. (5) Apply concepts of physics to diving. (6) Recognize and apply first aid to divers with underwater injuries or illnesses. (7) Assist in planning diving operations, to include use of United States Navy (USN) diving tables. (8) Apply techniques of infiltration and exfiltration using scuba and surface swimming. (9) Rig bundles and combat equipment for underwater or surface swimming operations. (10) Navigate 1,500 meters underwater with a compass to required time and accuracy standards as prescribed by USAJFKSWCS. (11) Conduct underwater searches to include ship bottom searches. (12) Perform a surface swim (3,000 meters) to required time standard as prescribed by USAJFKSWC. (13) Apply techniques used to waterproof and transport demolitions. (14) Perform free ascents from 25 and from 50 feet, respectively. (15) Swim 50 meters underwater without breaking the surface as prescribed by USAJFKSWCS. (16) Complete a 1,500 meter closed-circuit combat infiltration swim as a member of a team consisting of at least six men with load carrying equipment, rucksack and weapon. Quote:

They changed the name of the qualification and design of the badge back in 2004 though, from "SCUBA Diver Badge" to "Special Operations Diver Badge" (which features a LAR rebreather/CCUBA instead of the old SCUBA head, see here). But you're right, I suppose the change is recent enough that people probably still call it the SCUBA badge in reference to its old name and design (so recent, in fact, that the Pentagon page I linked to mistakenly refers to the Special Operations Diver mini-badge as the SCUBA mini-badge at the bottom of the document).

Going back to Serpentor (whom I think we were talking about at some point), anybody think of a less goofy name for him (besides DDP's General Phillip A. Rey) if one were to remake GI Joe in a less fantastical context?
Anybody got better alternatives? Last edited by zuludelta; 02-15-2010 at 07:49 PM.. |

I'm not so sure there's anything inherently wrong with the name "Serpentor". Is it possible that the name is only so distasteful because of the images it calls to mind? For example, if they made "Serpentor" a last name to a business-type CEO figure who wears a suit and is ruthless... that might not be SO terrible. If they treat it properly, it could possibly narrate the character in a way that we no longer find ridiculous. I mean, a LOT of fans didn't care for Chuckles before the Cobra series. I think a lot of people have reevaluated their opinion of that character and the code name no longer sounds so crazy.

What was their motivation for wanting to dive for the Army? For them, why not the Marines or the Navy? Do you know anything about their training or purpose or missions?

I don't see anything really wrong with the Serpentor name. It is corny but not that bad.
