I'm seeing Serpentor as a sort of Royalty figure. Someone who has been carefully bred for generations as opposed to a clone. Say every royal family in the world buys into this individual, and basically Serpentor is the product of all the second sons through time. That's how Virginia was formed. British nobility were awarded tracks of land in America, which no first son holding title would take. The "second sons" would venture to the new world and lay claim to the land as a sort of consolation prize and make a name for themselves. (The original Virginia Charter was all North Carolina up to New York) ie the Lees; the Byrds; the Washingtons;
Well imagine instead royalty from around the world would allow a lesser son or daughter to marry an individual who is the carrier of the super genes which lead to Serpentor. Where all the military training comes in I'm not sure? I suppose this family would try to send their sons to fight in every war there is. And who else to aid Serpentor in this regard would be Crystal Ball. Instead of Mindbender being his right hand, a Rasputinesque CB would fill that role. |

Loose, that's the idea behind my Serpentor/Rey, lol
I'm not sure about the Cobra Series news. I'm kind of worried that they're rushing to introduce all these characters in. I think they kind of got spoiled and it's alot harder now to maintain the same level of stories and not fall into a rut and just keep doing the same thing over and over. Also worried that introducing Serpentor too soon. We've just barely gotten introduced to Cobra and Cobra Commander. The Joes haven't even had a major encounter with them yet. And already bringing Serpentor into the mix? It'll all depend on how he's handled. But I'm not too thrilled just yet. Also worried that Gage/Costas won't be able to maintain the same level of stories that they did with Cobra I and the Special, with it becoming an ongoing. So far they're introducing character after character and seem to be going for the shock introduction (Croc Master), Also worried about how this will affect the main comic. Shouldn't some of these concepts be introduced in the main comic? I don't now. Cautiously optimistic would describe my feelings. I keep seeing Crossgen and early Image. First things that popped into my head. Crossgen had great foundation and then success made them reach too fast and too far. The same with Image. Lots of small publishers have been brought down by the reaching too fast and too far. They get popular and then just go crazy.

Here are a few recruitment mottos that Cobra might have.
Join Cobra and see the World. Just not your normal garden spots. Tired of having somebody looking over your shoulder. Join Cobra and we will watch your back. As well as your every move. Join Cobra and you will have no regrets. Even if you did,you are with us for life,however long that will be. |

That's my worry, too. I keep thinking of Mike Mignola's Hellboy model and I wish IDW would adopt that for GI Joe Cobra. Hellboy is probably the best known Dark Horse-affiliated property, but he's never starred in an on-going series, just a bunch of mini-series. I like that type of release schedule since the creative team is under no pressure to keep churning out story after story, month after month. With Hellboy, Mignola releases a mini-series only when he has a story that he feels is worth telling, so it's "all killer and no filler." The quality of the Hellboy mini-series is such that the trades continue to be top-sellers years after their initial publication.

Perfect example. Cobra should follow that model. So should Origins. Origins has turned into what I'm afraid Cobra will. I said this in the thread on the Cobra ongoing. Let's face it, after the first arc Origins has been going down hill. Hama's 2nd arc? Not that good. Beachhead. Bad. Baroness? Good. But because it's an ongoing monthly, they need the filler inbetween the killer.

The thing that I don't like about Origins & and GI Joe (and I haven't lost interest yet) is the idea that they must retell all the old stories in a new way. The attack on the PIT, the disfigurement of Snake Eyes, the MASS Device--these stories are so imbedded in the psyche of Joe fans that any attempt to simply rewrite them sacrifices creativity and freshness.
I'm not against the idea of a new continuity or restarting GI Joe but instead of walking the same path in different shoes I would have liked to see Hama and others break new ground. And it also feels that there's a rush to explain everything that has shaped the characters without taking the time to really develop them. On this note, Cobra has been a success. Chuckles has been thoroughly fleshed out and the readers have gotten a good sense of who he is and what makes him tick. So despite what some mayhave thought of him in Marvel, he's become the most human character that IDW has created and this creates a suspense all of its own. |

Lots of small publishers have been brought down by the reaching too fast and too far. They get popular and then just go crazy. I can't say you didn't shape that opinion for a real life Serpentor. My verse Serpentor is a Clone, using Tech Cobra Stole from the Star Wars Clones. And he has basically a few brother clones. The younger ones in custody; Hannibal; Venomous Maximus (A failed clone) and Lobot Serpentor(I took an extra Serpentor head and put in on Comic pack Destro. He looks like Lobot) But I see how IDW is crancking out so many titles they may run out of steam and old stories to retell. Plus like you guys are saying all the introduction of Characters. Still many of the old fans want to hurry up and see their favorites. From my fanboy perspective, since I'm not a comic critic, I love just seeing characters. Can you imagine if they had to follow a toy introduction timeline? Does anyone know if they will be making figures from IDW anytime soon? Quote:

I feel like before long they are going to saturate the Joe comic Market with all these ongoing titles. I think why Cobra I and Cobra Special and even Origins, those were all designed with having a conclusion to the story however open ended they left it. We'll see. |

I just brought up because of the breeding program in Dune. They use a similar program in the second season of Dark Angel, which pit genetically engineered super-soldiers against a selectively breed master race. But if you like polictical intrigue, I recommend you check at least the first 3-4 books of the Dune series. The whole series gives new meaning to playing the long game.
