Yeah, that was him. He was in DDP later on, I think. I believe he was a member of the Plague.
I guess I just have a hard time believing that these guys that join Cobra would want Cobra Commander to rule the world, unless there was some kind of fundamental belief they shared with him. It's not religion. He's not really big on spreading the wealth, so it's not monetary reward. Cobra was SO lily white for SO long... I always saw them as White supremicists. I always really liked how the Joes had so many minorities who played big roles on the Joe Team. There are a lot of Native Americans, African Americans, Asian Americans, and even 2 Pacific Islanders. The Crimson Guard Fred's always just seemed so "Aryan" to me. They're like the Hitler youth all grown up.

I know it's been talked to death in this thread, but the inclusion of minorities in GI Joe's roster was a big, big reason I got into the toyline and the comics. I think every kid can benefit from having someone they can associate themselves with to look up to (even if it's just a little plastic man). I guess it can sound a bit superficial of me, and of course there is no shortage of Asian, Asian-American, and Asian-Canadian role models in history and contemporary society, but when I was a kid, I wasn't exactly interested in becoming the next Jose Rizal, Feng Shan Ho, or David Suzuki. I wanted to be the hero who kicked bad-guy ass, and I'm just glad GI Joe was there (ha ha) to show me (and other impressionable kids like me) that not all heroes were blue-eyed, blond caucasians. |

I see Cobra as a totally Anti-Racist organizations. Cobra thinks Globally. CC isn't messing around with petty squabbles inside Cobra. Sure he'll exploit the hell out of a Tribal/clan bloodfeud, like the best colonialist, but it does him no good to discriminate against any particular group aside from "Politicians" and other figures of authority. He'll recruit the best of the best, but does whatever makes good business sense.
I'm sure he doesn't send Lt Clay Moore to bring guns to White Supremecists Neo-Facist gun buyers. But I'll bet he'll send him with a bunch of Shock-Vipers to burn their camp to the ground if they don't pay up. Still how ruthless is he? Well he has no scruples right? So he basically can do whatever he wants, and sleep good at night. Although I wonder how he would really sleep? Who guards the commander when he sleeps? But I agree Zulu. I imagine there are many fans of GIJoe who may like all the characters, but the one figure that represents their heritage will always hold a special place. As Well as birthplace. Come one Hasbro, fix the filecards! |

I think CC's motivations have always been suspect. Too often in comics and film we see a villian that is evil for evil's sake. Not too complex there, nor interesting in my opinion. In ROC and the cartoons he seems geared for global domination, like a Hitler of sorts, but the question is why. Is he just insane, delusional? He could make a better place for himself by just exploiting smaller, defenseless nations, taking their resources and dominating a smaller part of the world. I see him as a great corporate power founded on some ideological basis (not particularly racist or religious) that seeks to fulfill his needs. I see him as a bit more complex with some "good" qualities that might attract others. If he's completely ruthless toward everyone including his own men, I don't see how they would stick around for very long. They're rogue warriors, international outlaws. The payoff--monetary or ideological--has to be big.

The payoff is a house with a white picket fence in Springfield.

Admittedly, I'm a white guy (who does look much like Lifeline), but the utterly blatant stereotype that is Duke has always left me cold. This is priceless. |

You may be on to something there Tanksmasher. I can imagine it may be held together like the Mercenary armies of old. They're true soldiers. So much so they can't really stop being soldiers, and go back to the farm or the desk job. Plus the comraderie probably holds them together like a band of gladiators. Eventually they will probably die a violent death and they have come to accept it. Like the French Foreign Legion, Cobra probably recruits a certain type of individual who wants to fall off the map. I can't imagine training for a Blueshirt is as tough. But it stills makes a man out of you.
They probably don't have much in the way of families. Or perhaps they stayed in the military long enough, they lost touch with everything. They may have had a family that fell apart and have no intention of trying to do it all over again. I can see the Cobra NCOs as really being the backbone of Cobra. Sure any young desperate hoodlem could fall for some convincing speal about the riches and adventure he'll discover. Army recruiters sucker in their fair share. However someone has to manage these recruits when they get there. These guys are the professionals. These are the guys that aren't afraid to shoot deserters. These are the guys who really get paid. Imagine, a squad of blueshirts goes into battle, hijacks a train, or robs a bank and they pretty much all get killed. The payoff gets split up with the survivors, and you can bet the Sgt does everything in his power to make it out. Like modern day outlaws, some people just don't like following rules. |

Claymoore wasn't in the Plague. Nick Bailey was the african american member, Vanguard.
I think CC will be political and racist only if it serves him. Backing one political cause (or one race in a tribal war) if it will end up netting him some goal.
