That's interesting, Loose. How evil do you think Cobra Commander is? Is he on par with Hitler? I don't even think UBL is as bad as Hitler or Stalin... of course, lack of oportunity should not be mistaken for good judgement.
I don't know. It's hard to imagine anyone - let alone thousands of people - following someone as evil and weird as Hitler. And yet, an entire nation of Western Europeans did just that. And yet, there was a racist overtone to the entire Nazi movement... is there a racist empetus behind Cobra? Other than Lt. Clay Moore, are there any promenent Black Cobra agents? Any in the old Marvel run? Desto was voiced by a Black guy on the Cartoon, but in the Comic he was White. Destro's son and Mistress Armada were black, but IDW was taking things in a different direction. Did Larry Hama intend for Cobra to be a Racist organization? They work with militia groups, and those groups are usually into "White Power" and don't like to work too closely with groups that aren't... unless they're selling them drugs or buying weapons from them.

I don't think Cobra would be a racist organization. It would need to be open to all philosophys, religions and races, otherwise it severely limits it's recruitment and operating abilities.
Being a worldwide organization, as opposed to a collection of like-minded countries (or conquoered) or country, it couldn't be limiting towards anyone.

Troynos,in one of your stories in your J.O.E. verse,Cobra liberated Blackout and one other person from going to prison. If Cobra Commander needed more people for his organization, why not take everybody that was on the bus? Would Cobra Commander take just anybody with questionable backgrounds.
Would the Cobra Troopers be will to have someone with a questionable background in their unit. Would they have a lot of blanket parties or unfortunate accidents. |

But he really wants people that seek him out or prove to be his type in other ways. In the Mercer stories, Mercer got recruited thru a merc organization he was working for. Mercer also says that military training gets to be Vipers, the rest of the pack are blueshirts. The thing with prisoners though is, you need to know why they are a prisoner. Just because you free him, doesn't mean he'll follow orders or be a good soldier. The prisoners did something wrong, so they might not work in the Cobra organization.

I don't know. Couldn't Cobra be racist? If Cobra commander were starting an organization in America, and trying to appeal to the baser insticts of people similar to himself (economic status, outrage at the government and IRS, sense of entitlement, feeling like and unappreciated "true American"), it seems like his best recruiting ground would be former military, working class white people.

But do you think the Commander would want to start an Army with untrained, undisciplined people from the inner city or immagrants? I'm not saying those people wouldn't be interested. I'm simply saying that the Commander would want people who he didn't have to train to be soldiers, were used to working, could speak english. Disgruntled, working class people would probably be the best recruiting base.

On the other hand, Cobra (at least in the comics), has always been about making a profit by instigating and promoting conflict and then selling arms and paramilitary services to as many customers as possible, and limiting their resource pool and target markets to those who share a white-supremacist philosophy seems counterintuitive. I can see Cobra being an a-political organisation though, providing arms and paramilitary training/support to any group that's willing to shell out the bucks, be they white supremacists, Marxist-Leninist revolutionaries, neo-fascists, violent anarchists, drug gangs, Islamic terror groups, armed Christian fundamentalist cults, armed secessionist movements, anti-government survivalist types, dictators, or even legitimate elected governments.
