It wasn't so much that they couldn't count past three (or five or ten or twenty, depending on the accounts), it's that their languages didn't have "names" for certain large numbers (like "twenty" or "fifty"), because living their entire lives in isolation and in the jungle, the Vietnamese and Cambodian Montagnards didn't really encounter large collections of individual items in nature. Their cardinal counting system would go from their words for one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten and so on until "more than twenty." The Montagnards were more than familiar with the idea of cardinality beyond twenty, though, they just didn't have native words for larger figures because they never needed them in the course of their existence as hunter-gatherers, slash-and-burn farmers, and foragers.
That's the type of thing an SF operator would have to be sharp enough to determine... the Montagnards, to a typical Western observer, would look awfully backward and stupid, but knowledge of their environment, language, culture, and lifestyle would reveal that they possess the same capacity for learning as "civilized" peoples. Same stuff that inspired the "Rambo" type movies. Saw an interview with a SEAL. He was talking about all the BS things that the public believes they are capable of doing. He said when they hear that, alot of the guys will say "Yeah, we can do that", then laugh about it among themselves.
I've lost track of the number of guys I've met on the plane to and from Southeast Asia claiming to be incognito SF, SEALs, or SAS (they probably assume that just because I'm a relatively small and inconspicuous male of obvious Asian descent that I don't know anything about the American or British military), when really, everything about them reeks of "pervy First World sex tourist looking for cheap drugs and under-aged prostitutes." I think the erroneous "super infantry/Rambo" perception of SF is also due to the distressingly large number of frauds claiming to be ex-SF or ex-Delta or whatever, many of them with their own books, websites, and social media following.

That's strange. I see various military websites that warn against making such false claims. I'm surprised there are that many people who pretend to be SF or a SEAL. Do they think people will faun over them and respect them more?

That's exactly why. Some use it to get police force/security jobs. Some just use it to pick up women.

Going back to the Montagnards, what was their motivation for aiding the US Forces? Were the Vietnamese and Cambodian Montagnards just an oppressed minority? And if so how are they doing now? I can imagine reprisals by the Viet-Cong would have been horrific once US forces withdrew, but I really don't know why.

Therefore, many of these ethnic groups hated the Vietnamese and thus were easy to recruit. I'm not really sure how they're treated today or what happened to various tribes after the US withdrew. |

Many of these people were later given political asylum in the United States and Canada, a girl I used to work with in a laboratory here in Canada came from those camps. She had some really interesting stories about escaping Vietnam (she was 4 years old when her dad took her with him as he fled the country in the early 1980s): going to sea on a makeshift raft with a couple dozen other people, throwing the very sick (but still living) people overboard to keep them from infecting the other escapees, drifting aimlessly in the South China Sea for weeks until a freighter passed by and picked them up. Well that's nice to know the US took care of some, but I can only imagine it was a drop in the bucket. When I lived in the DC area, there was a sizeable Vietnamese population. But I never really heard the stories, of how they got there. Now I heard tons of stories of escape, from Salvadorians, Nicaruagans, and some Afghans. Still I suppose any major conflict brings the inevitable refugee problem.
I'm reading a book called "Hitler's Europe" which is more of an account of actual numbers for the Holocaust. Utterly ruthless. The sheer numbers are staggering. I wonder how Cobra Commander stacks up to some of the major players in the SS? He never really seems to hurt anyone in the Marvel Run. But DDP has him killing a nursery full of babies. I guess what I envision and what I really want to see in the comics may not be the same thing. |
