As a former Ranger, I must say that anyone who joins the military, and takes the chance of going to war for 800-1100 dollars a month is badass, be it a Ranger, Green Beret, Seal, Etc.
Another thing is that I know Coast Guard guys who saw more action and killed more people than Green Berets or Seals who trained but never saw combat. Everyone must remember that some guys train their entire careers and never get shipped out. Side Note: Supposedly two coasties should be graduating SQT in the next month or so.

This goes back to the point I raised a couple of hundred pages back about how in many other countries like China (and the Hong Kong SAR), Germany, and Turkey, the gendarmerie or the federal police's special units are considered to be just as elite as (or even more elite than) the military's special operations-capable units, because more often than not, they are the ones that actually get to apply and refine their training in real-world situations. Germany's first batch of KSK (Special Forces Command) operators were actually trained by the GSG 9 (Germany's elite border guard). Turkey's Polis Özel Harekat and Jandarma Özel Asayiş Komutanlığı probably have more collective counter-terrorism experience and documented success against religious/separatist militants than most NATO-affiliated military departments (including USSOCOM).

His argument was that if a commander is using SF as some sort of "super infantry," then he's mis-using his SF assets and risking a huge government investment doing a job that isn't part of their mandate in the first place. Reed's concern was that the extremely stringent physical requirements for SF would weed out those who might have advanced language/technical skills and extensive cross-cultural experience but aren't exactly physical freaks, and replace them with super-athletic specimens who might have only middling language skills and merely adequate technical backgrounds. His objection is based on the fact that there's nothing in the SF mission, as originally formulated, that demands near-superhuman levels of physicality and tactical performance. And yet, it seems that there's an overriding emphasis on it these days, beyond the traditional "SF skills" of languages, psywar, and the development of rapport with indigenous friendlies. |

I think it's public perception, where it came from not sure, that SF = Super Soldiers. In the "nerd" skills don't equate to being Super, if know what I mean.

Unfortunately, I think movies like "Rambo" do little to dissuade people of that notion. The "Green Berets" movie from the '60s is probably much closer to the truth.

I can't remember his name now, but there was an American commander who did exactly what Reed is so critical of (the use of SF as conventional infantry assets) a couple of years back in Iraq. He was using SF for routine infantry patrols and as personal bodyguards. I remember there was a minor flap in the military community over that... the thing was, if an SF soldier gets shot by an indig sniper in the course of routine patrolling or acting as a bullet-stopper, that's what, anywhere from half a million to a million dollars worth of training lost. And it's not as if the SF soldier would able to use his highly coveted specialised skills to great effect as a patrolman or bodyguard. A similarly tenured regular infantryman would probably perform just as well as an SF-qualified soldier when it comes to routine patrol/bullet-stopper duties.

Same stuff that inspired the "Rambo" type movies. Saw an interview with a SEAL. He was talking about all the BS things that the public believes they are capable of doing. He said when they hear that, alot of the guys will say "Yeah, we can do that", then laugh about it among themselves.

Yeah, there is a futurisitc element when you consider Flash and Cobra's weaponry early on, and the Joes certainly moved toward a high-tech, futuristic unit as the years passed, but most of the Joe equipment was initially based on current and perhaps even some outdated hardware. The Mobat closely resembles the M551, the MMS was based on the MIM-23 Hawk, the Skystriker was clearly an F-14, Zap has a "Bazooka" which was probably meant to be an M67 recoilless gun, which was still referred to (albeit incorrectly) as a bazooka by soldiers in Nam, and of course there's the Nam backstory for Stalker and SE, so I'm not sure they were intentionally trying to distance themselves. There was also another comic series out around the time called Nam which makes me think that Marvel and Hasbro didn't find the Nam backstory too controversial at the time.
